Emerald Wells Café and Bakery 28, January 1956 – Speakeasy Night
74
The sign on the store front read, ‘Emerald Wells Cafe’. Normally, each morning at 6 a.m. Emmy would turn the key in the front door, hit the lights, turn the little sign with the clock hands facing outward announcing ‘Open’ and make her way to the coffee machine to get the first pot brewing. This morning Rose opened. Em and Harold were last seen driving off down to Mexico. They couldn’t say how long they would be gone.
Em and Rose had worked out a deal. The Café would be expanded. Richard and A.A. would do the work. She would move her bakery business inside the café. Earl would have to share the kitchen in the early hours as the two’s work overlapped.
Carl a regular fixture at the first seat of the counter has not been around. The excitement of discovery of oil on his property facing highway 29 on Em and Harold’s wedding day has kept him very busy.
Dale arrived, sat in the first booth. Earl peeked through the pass through and began cooking Dale’s breakfast of eggs, hash browns and coffee. Gabby whose dress shop was next to Carl’s automotive shop rushed in ringing the bell above the door ‘Morning All’, she called and went to peruse the fresh pastries.
“Morning,” Earl called through the pass through. Gabby was a regular.
Rose found where Em put her paper, grabbed one and wrote ‘Speakeasy Night” and taped it to the front door.
“That’s tonight?” asked Dale.
“Tonight?” Gabby said. “OK I’ll be ready.”
“Dale, you in?” asked Rose.
“Remember, no Em, Harold or likely Carl” Rose added.
“That’s tonight?” came through the pass through.
“We missed last month” added Rose.
Gabby left worried, she would have to throw something together.
Dale, left and pulled his patrol car behind the hardware store. He had a poem to write today.
Rose and Earl looked at each other neither had a poem written. No one wanted to see Speakeasy Night come to an end. The holidays had made them all skip a beat.
The morning passed quietly. About 11:00 am a 1950 Plymouth Suburban with the wood paneling on the sides pulled up in front of the café. The driver got out and opened the back door. A tall handsome man wearing a white suit, cowboy boots and big white cowboy hat climbed out, followed by a beautiful lady wearing a white dress.
They entered the café, ringing the bell above the door. They both survived the empty room. “Hello”, he called.
Earl forgot he was by himself this afternoon. He set his writing pad down and walked to the front. He recognized the fella, but could not place him. “Hi, what can I get you?”
“We have an appointment this afternoon up on highway 29. Fella driving a truck told us some time back, that if we were ever out this way to stop and have a meal here. Harold was his name.”
“Grab a booth, what’ll you have.”
“Steaks”, came the answer. “And some fries.”
“Could I get a bottle of Coke-Cola?” the lady asked.
“Me too”, the Texan added.
Earl served them their drinks, walked back to the kitchen. The driver was standing in the kitchen, “Will you serve me?” he asked.
Earl looked at him, “Sure, but not in the kitchen, go through there, grab a seat at the counter.”
“That might not be such a good idea,” the man replied. “If you can make me a sandwich, I’ll just eat it out back, if you don’t mind.”
“Sure, let me get these steaks on. Have a seat on that stool while you wait.”
Earl threw the steaks on, and served the ice cold Cokes in bottles. Coming back into the kitchen, “My names Earl by-the-way” extending his hand.
“They call me Big Ed.” the man replied.
While Earl was frying up the steaks, Big Ed picked up the newspaper Earl had been reading. “Look here, it says H.L. Mencken passed. I listened to him on the radio when I get a chance. He sure turns the words.”
The couple finished up their lunch. Paid their bill and walked out carrying their Coke bottles. The sun had broken through. Big Ed was waiting at the car door when they arrived and opened it for them. Big Ed pulled away from the curb, made his u-turn and headed out towards Highway 29. He turned right at the Trading Post and made their way up the highway.
The man in the white hat opened his window and tossed his Coke bottle to the side of the highway. “Big Ed stopped the car. Lyndon,” she yelled, “this is Our Home. You wouldn’t throw a bottle on the floor in our living room would you?”
Big Ed stopped, and backed up. Lyndon got out and walked over and picked up the bottle. He got in tossed the bottle onto the front seat. “Happy now Ladybird?” he said as he climbed in and patted her on the knee.
Big Ed continued on toward Carl’s place. There was oil to talk about.
The afternoon passed quietly. Earl sunk some wine bottles into ice in the kitchen sink. Rose finished up making some desserts for Speakeasy night. Earl cleaned the tea cups they used for the occasion.
At six p.m. the sign on the front door was turned to say closed. Both Rose and Dale would rush home to change clothes, neither wanted to attend Speakeasy Night in their work clothes.
Gabby was first to arrive she carried in a bottle to add to the ice. “Anyone here?” She arranged some things on the counter to keep busy for a moment. Dale pulled his squad car across the street and parked in the lot behind the hardware store and crossed over.
“Hey Gabby, where is everyone?” he asked.
“It looks like a quiet night, with just the four of us.” She answered.
“Carl isn’t coming?” he asked.
“I don’t think so.” she answered.
Rose and Earl arrived. Rose saw that Gabby had rearrange her desserts on the counter and just smiled to herself.
Earl went to the back and opened a bottle and poured four cups. Walking into the front, “Dale join us for one tonight?”, and handed him a tea cup. “How did everyone’s day go?”
Rose asked if anyone needed anything. And then asked if anyone wanted to go first. “Looks like a quick Speakeasy Night this time.” She raised her tea cup and took a sip.
Richard driving Harold’s truck pulled in to the lot and parked next to Dale’s squad car. Dale got up and put his tea cup behind the counter and helped himself to a bottle of coke.
A.A. and Richard walked across the street and entered the café, ringing the bell above the jam. “Can anyone attend?” he asked. A.A. stood behind him carrying his guitar.
Rose and Earl glanced at each other. Rose said, “Sure, come on in boys. You know how this works?”
“My Dad has mentioned it, does it have to be a poem? I’ve been working on something.” Richard answered.
“I have something that might be ok too.” added A.A. He strummed his guitar.
“Let me get you guys some cokes. Grab a seat.” Earl being the host. He returned with ice cold cokes. “I think I’ll go first, any objections?”
He took the center of the floor.
Earl
I found a spot near Yellow Rose Texas
Just enough land for some cattle to roam
I found a spot near Yellow Rose Texas
Gonna build me a place and call it my home
A patch of pecan trees shade the banks of the river
A nice little river where sweet water flows
On summer afternoons we’ll swim in that river
Then spread a blanket, in the shade we can doze
We’ll make beautiful music, where the sweet water flows
By the bank of our river in the pecan trees shade
I’ll play my guitar and you’ll lay and write prose
This Texas our home, the spot Yellow Rose
He finished and folded the piece of paper and stuffed it into his pocket.
Rose wondered if there was any truth to the poem. Earl was hard to read.
“Who’s next?” as Rose taking over for what usually fell to Em.
Gabby stood, “Let me get this one out of the way.” She glanced at the young men.
Gabby
You say your love is growing
You say it’s incomplete
You say come lay beside me
To hear my kind heart beat
You say you want to be with me
You say you really care
You caress the outline of my face
And run your fingers through my hair
You head out in the morning
Into the Texas sun
Your rig is rolling down the highway
It appears you had your fun
Dale and Earl gave light applause Richard and A.A. followed their lead.
Rose said, ”I’ll go next, ok Dale?”
“Sure, Rose.”
Rose stood, “I sent away for a book and it had a new kind of poetry called Haiku, and I thought I’d try it.”
Rose
The snow does drift high
Piling to the windows edge
But my heart is warm
Cold tries to enter
The fires are stoked with dry wood
Smoke turns cold outside
The cold ghosts gather
At the window sill they swirl
Outside wanting in
The boys and Gabby stand and applaud. Earl and Dale give her a hug. Richard and A.A. stay in their seats.
“Boys, Dale, who is next?” asked Rose.
“I’ll go.” said Dale.
Dale
Rumor was when you needed it done
You sent out word for this hired gun
When tweren’t time for a vengeful God
You sent off for the fellow called Marshal Todd
I weren’t there, but the story is told
He tracked that killer through storm and cold
In ambush lay the buzzard named Ned
Ol’ Todd shot him but not completely dead
It were Gwen Applegate who met her fate
When Ned’s thoughts turned to hate
But Ol’Todd’s aim was straight
When a bear came by it was Ned he ate
They stood and applauded. The evening was going by quickly. “Let’s stop for dessert”, Rose piped up.
No one ever seemed to argue about dessert.
Earl filled the tea cups in the back. Even though both Richard and A.A. were aware what they were drinking. Dale, A.A. and Richard were drinking Coke-Cola and that was fine with the three of them.
Richard asked for the guitar. “I’m just learning this, it might be just to hide behind at the moment.” He ran his guitar pick over the strings. “This is just something I have been working on.” he added.
Richard
Do you know the day you failed
exactly how you got derailed
did you gamble all your pay?
did a woman walk away?
Was it a special piece of news
that made you sing the blues?
Do you know the day you failed?
you missed a ship that sailed?
Was it an invitation to come and play
but you didn’t know what to say?
did you walk away from school?
did you think you were too cool?
Do you know the day you failed?
exactly how you got derailed
You say you have no a clue,
well I do
“That was good”, Rose spoke up. Earl and Dale got up and patted him on the back.
“You ready A.A.?”, Richard asked.
“Sure man, I’ll give it a go.” Richard handed the guitar back. ‘Like Richard said, this is just something I have been working on.”
Arturo Alverez
Here I lay, life reassessed
So much to digest
You keep singing about our nest
About our nest
You shared your troubles
I know what you detest,
know what you’ve expressed,
know what you like best
Here I lay, life reassessed
Is this love or are you obsessed
You keep singing about our nest
About our nest
This is life, it’s not a contest
it’s not a long test
your cares they suggest
you’re set on your quest
Is this love or are you obsessed
Now you’ve undressed
Against me you’ve pressed
Drawing circles on my chest
Here I lay thoughts in unrest
enjoying the waves at their crest
against me you’ve pressed
drawing circles on my chest
Rose and Gabby look at each other a long moment. They then applaud. Dale and Earl again get up and pat A.A. on the back. Earl filled the teacups again. Rose insisted on serving another dessert. A.A. got up dropped a nickel in the juke box and asked Gabby to dance. Rose looked over at Carl, they joined in the dance. Everyone was relaxed in was Speakeasy Night.

Another lovely day at the cafe! Mck, I was sitting here in VA and waiting on an interview...thought I would check in...you've taken my anxiety away. Thanks so much! Hope you are doing well, my friend! Peace and happiness. Love, Erin
Good morning Mike,
I was so happy to see Lyndon and Ladybird Johnson grace the cafe..and the poety was wonderful. I loved Earls poem... of course I am a bit partial..I think I know that spot he speaks about..it is just up the road..A.A put out a heart felt poem too...wow..that was deep..I loved it..
"Here I lay thoughts in unrest
enjoying the waves at their crest
against me you’ve pressed
drawing circles on my chest"
What a wonderful hub. You did such a great job on this one filled with many wonderful thoughts, twists, and turns..
Have a wonderful day,
Sunnie
Wow, what an amazing night..
You have an abundance of talented folks around the cafe, and friends who share.
I've heard folk music is becoming popular..something like beatniks the lyrics are protesting..you never know:)
I'd love a dark roast coffee, a large one, and a buttermilk biscuit with jam. Thankyou Mike.
Mike, a bakery. OMG there goes the next diet lol I will have to pay a visit for cream buns and flaky pastry tarts filled with strawberries and chocolate cake and oh mmmmmm,
Net:)
Another fun hub at my favotite little cafe. I loved all the peoms, especially Rose's Haiku. I wish i could have been there to meet Ladybird, she's always been one of my favorite First Ladies...Your writing gets better and better Mck. Thank you again..Who is Dan George?..I'm on my way to listen to his video...Cheers
This is another of your great stories. I enjoyed it even with Em and Harold replaced by A.A. and Richard. Two generations at the Speakeasy night. It is always wonderful when you can keep generations mixing. I loved all of the poems and songs now too. Gabby's poem was particularly poignant. Men are slobs, all out for their fun. Poor disappointed Gabby.
Wow Always you are so observant. re: Dan George. I missed that completely.
Oh Mck, I wanted to add how much i admired your writing skill concerning The President's driver. I know back in the 50's Blacks were not allowed to eat in many places. I knew that our little cafe wouldn't be like that..Cheers
I was wondering about that Ladybird with the pop bottle thing, how clever.
I'm pleased to hear the bakery is now inthe cafe, it smells delicious, I often felt sorry for Rose trailing that cart around.
Nice to see to see Lyndon and Ladybird Johnson pop in for lunch too. Never know who is going to drop by.
Another great night, loved the poems especially Earl's and Gabby's, and Dale's and it was great to listn to Richard and A.A's songs too, love that guitar strumming.
My Grandad used to sing yellow Rose of texas to me when I was young so it was nice to listen to that again.
You did a great job again Mike.
What a talented group you had there last night! Of course, I'm partial to Gabby's lament. And Yellow Rose of Texas was sung in our childhood home often along with Red River Valley. I can imagine a scene exactly like the one you described with Ladybird setting LBJ straight on the coke bottle tossing. She was an advance advocate of the "Don't Mess With Texas" campaign. Litterers are subject to the shoot first, ask questions later rule out here. Thanks Mck, for adding the coffee photo and for another great read.
Hi Mike, another wonderful and entertaining speakeasy night, I always look forward to them.
I loved the poems, Rose's Haiku was my favourite!
What a great idea to have the bakery in the cafe, the aroma in here is just divine...
Fabulous work Mike and voted up!
Oh, Good Morning, Ya'll,
I was heading to Christmas land (all mixed up since HP stopped sending me notices a few days ago), when I started following my Sista and found ... O I L A ... a fabulous new Cafe adventure to start this new year off right!
My Mom would have loved reading along with me, as Ladybird was one of her favorite first ladies, drinking an old fashioned coke, also our favorite! This one brought back great memories for me, even my painful piano recitals (yes, 'Yellow Rose of Texas'! my poor family...) This video is much more melodic, thanks, Mike!
Love all the poems and songs as well. Really rooting for that dear Gabby this year.
Is it too early for a large coke and fries? Have a happy day all, mar!
A Speakeasy night, yeah! Oh it is just so much fun and interesting. I love the poetry and the visitors made my day. I always have loved Mrs. Johnson. She "is" such a lady and well deserves the name.
The songs are perfect and I am just having a great time here. Now Rose will be in the Cafe all the time so I must walk more and burn off the calories. But it sure is worth the work. Thank you for this wonderful Speakeasy.
PS- I did miss the missing regulars, but know people have lives to live. I am smiling so big here.
Afternoon all. I hope the weather is better there than here. Hope your all keeping warm. Cold and wet here. Now for the big question. Why is Carl going to be a problem? He just needs to get his priorities straight. Maybe he needs someone like Gabby to set him straight. All work and no fun makes Carl a very dull boy.
Well, he definitely needs an old friend to keep him straight. A heavy conversation about keeping life real could be in order. I don't necessarily mean a romance.
Good morning (for me). I need a HUGE mug of coffee. We survived a tornado last night. It took out all of our trees, even the 60 ft old oaks and my neighbors RV is missing. But our home is fine and so are we. Praise God for protection. I see a Hub coming from this experience.
Good Morning Brenda,
I am so thankful you and your family are okay. Praise God indeed..
Me too Sunnie. When daylight came I walked outside and am stunned. The damage to our neighborhood is tremendous. Our home lost all of the trees and a broken window and the roof is slightly damaged. But we are all okay on the street. No one was injured thankfully. I thought my son would go back into the womb when that freight train sound it and the noise from 60 foot trees breaking hit.
Good morning Hyphenbird. Are you ok? Amazing you still have power (I hope). Can you take any photos for us? Can you write a Hub on it? We need to know more. Sure hope you're all right.
Hi Snakeslane. Our power was restored about 5am. We are physically okay but emotionally drained. I will take pictures and write a Hub about this. You can see the damage by going to WBTV in Charlotte NC. Their helicopter is flying over right now. Thank you all for your support and love.
Oh Hyph,
Just left your hub... thinking of you and your son, sending you both a big hug and a kiss. Be safe.
Love you, Maria
I just read the news there and looked at a slideshow Hyphenbird. That must have been so scary for you and your son. Especially happening like that in the middle of the night. You are so lucky you didn't get hurt.
Glad you're good Hyphen.
No, Mike, NC is tornado country. So is here.
If you are ever in Arizona, stop at the Iron Horse in Chino Valley, on 89. It's the Emerald Wells of Arizona!
Another great one. and I loved the Lindon/Lady Bird part!
Hyph our prayers are with you..I know it must have been so hard to walk outside and see all the devastation. So happy you, your son and neighbors are safe.
Hugs,
Sunnie
Morning all.
Pleased to hear you and your son are OK Hyphen.
Mike I meant to say earlier and forgot, I like that you have added the date to the title.
Can I have some coffee and peeacan pie please.
Mike I believe you've created another 'The Waltons' with the Emerald Wells Cafe. Not so much in a family bio sense but a family just the same. Would a tv program like the Waltons in this day and age go over...maybe. When the tall cowboy fella walked in I had to stop reading a sec and think; what a surprise there! Earl's poem brought up the memory of alittle spot of land me pops owned below El Paso that he always dreamed of retiring to some day. Never happened but it was ok.
Hello all, Oh Hyphen, I'm so glad you are all right. I saw some of the damage on the nightly news.. It is really cold here 22, going to get down in the teens tonight..I'm staying in..I hate the cold..I would love to be sun bathing on a beach...I think i'll splurge and have a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows..
It is cold Mike. Not just to you, but to me too. That is what we have right now and ice all over the roads. Snowed about an inch, melted and then froze.
I think I'll join Ruby with hot chocolate. I feel in need of some comfort after reading TL's story.
32 degrees here today but galeforce winds blowing up dust after a few dry hot days.
....fab-bew-lus says the epi man to Sir Mike - the writer's writer, that you are, and it's got SNAKESLANE ALL OVER THE PLACE IN THE COMMENT SECTION - how lucky of a man you are - and I love your presentation of the new world class order with images and videos and stuff to buy - which means one thing - look over the rainbow and you will find your masterwork once again posted to my Facebook page with a direct link back here - if this isn't the most legendary series I've ever seen in hub history then I don't have very good taste ......and I always get a bottomless cup of coffee when I come here
lake erie time 12:09am listening to Enya and mellow now
It's called winter. LOL!!! A storm front came through. Following the storm that spawned the tornados that hit NC. It went through Knoxville yesterday and they were waiting for the tornados to start dropping there. The conditions were right, swirling, rain, and all.
Just saying hello and letting you all know we are fine. Samaritan's Purse is helping us with tree removal and water issues (my tree fell on neighbor's well house) and people are kind and loving. When I have a few minutes I need a gallon of coffee and a bear claw the size of a dinner plate!
Good morning mckbirdbks, Hyphenbird, Becky (who else is here?). Tis winter here too, snow on the way brrrr. Will put a hold on yard work...coffee smells good. Great to hear you're getting some assistance there Hyphenbird.
Thanks mckbbks. Are you superstitious? Friday the 13th? I wonder if someone will do a hub on this today?
Wiki says the fear of Friday the 13th is called 'friggatriskaidekaphobia'. Put that in your Spelling Bee!
Dear snakeslane,
That horrid word sounds like what my brother called my sister, eventually sending her into a life of the cloister! Yikes! I am sure to misspell on purpose.
May I please have a big ole mug of hot chocolate, Mike? I am having a very difficult time concentrating this morning, mar.
Oh my! I was just coming over for a cuppa and read about Hyphen's NC weather. Dear lady H, I hope you and your neighbors are all OK. I had to call my sister in RockHill to check on her. She's about 60 miles from you so all is well. I've been so out of touch.
Sweet Maria, would you please scoot over and let me in the booth? I'd love some scrambled eggs and biscuits with honey if the grill is still on.
Yes, 'we' are. Funny about the hitting thumb with hammer word. And Marcoujor's comment too.
Hey there Mike, Coffee please. How are you today? Hope all is well. I graduated HS on Friday the 13th so it's a lucky day for me. Snakeslane, thanks for the new cuss word! Winter is here too. The dog's water froze in their dish outside. And the blackbirds just emptied my birdfeeder. Wish I coulda' taken a video. It was like Alfred Hitchcock out there.
Hey Ms Peg you are welcome. It was a surprise to me when I looked it up. Congratulations on the HS graduation! Nice of you to feed the birds. Sounds too cold.
Ms. Lane, It was so long ago that miniskirts were the current rage unh huh. http://youtu.be/3CuCxxXCM4I
My Dad asked me where were the pants to go with my outfit. Too funny. It is cold here but nice and sunny.
Well La de dah dee dee, La de dah de dah... we used to wait til we got to school then roll up our skirts about six inches. Bad.
Safety pins for the bus ride in. Yep, they were supposed to be to the middle of the knee according to my folks. Then those secret stashes of lipstick in my locker. Fun times.
I liked the mint flavored lipstick. It was 'chalk' pink.
Morning all hows everybody.
Did I hear talk of mini skirts. I remember 1967 I had a shocking pink one that measured 12 inches, barely covered my butt. Lol. In 65 Hot pants too, loved those hot pants. And then op art some falred pants white down the front, black at the back , cannot think of the name of the material, like a thin leather, oooh this is annoying.
PVC that was it. loved those pants and I had a PVC black and white mini dress too. They were too hot at the discos though under those lights. Lol
What we suffer for fashion. Hee Hee
Good afternoon all. Glad Hyphen has help with the tree removal. We had a tree fall on our garage during the storms after Katrina. The insurance co. paid for the tree removal and a new garage. We called a friend who cut wood all the time. He came out with a couple of friends and cut the tree up. We made new steps with the rounds of wood. It was a 40 ft Tulip poplar, and about 3 ft across. We flattened the back side of them, snugged them up to the concrete block wall, 2 rows of them. We snugged the front row into the holes as far as we could and then we carved the steps out with a chain saw. We filled in holes with gravel so they would be even. Then we poured varnish all over the top to make the wood grain show up and help protect the wood. The looked so pretty and everyone who saw them loved them.
Hey Mike! They say the brain is the first thing to go. But what do "they" know. And just who are "they" anyhow? We'll have no more talk of those greedy birds. Here's one just for you Mr. Mckbirdbks:
Where is the little Mockingbird
That used to sing to me?
He often sat upon a limb
Or atop the chimney.
Where he'd run through his favorite songs
The notes rang crisp and new
His shape against a clear blue sky
Stood proud and tall and true.
It's a bit ahead of that time to have miniskirts at the cafe but we could have a Poodle skirt night. And a sock hop. Rosemay could wear her PVC dress.
I assumed Peg you were talking about a Health Services (HS) course or something, did not for one second think HS referring to highschool.
Hello Mckbirdbks et al. Rosemay your disco wardrobe sounds pretty psychedelic! I can see that disco ball spinning.
OK, Sista Peg, you did it again! How could you know that 'yours truly' is a descendant from Cher. She has even loaned me some of her 'larger' sized plether and feather outfits to me that I'm sure you, Rosemay, myself and any of the other gals could wear to the disco. Perhaps Gabby could give us a hand with some alterations, at least on my end.
Oh that concentrating, not so much. I wonder if there's any mac and cheese around? I'm starving and could use a large coke. No rush, I'm going to listen to some more Cher.
Hi mar, I've been told I'm a look a like between Debra Winger (Lois Lane) and Cher a few times in my life. Now? Not so much (no botox). But I've got to draw the line at 'feather & plether'. I will be the wall flower at the Disco.
Y'all going to have a party? I haven't been to a disco since I lived in San Diego. Went with some friends from work.
Before and after that, I stuck to my country roots. Wasn't my thing.
OK, I am admittedly silly when a bit tired but who the heck remembers that movie with Patrick Swayze, John Leguarzammo and Wesley Snipes: 'To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar'...
I feel like if we had a disco it would be like all of us dressing up the way 'we' feel gorgeous and still remarkably individual, the way these girls did in the movie. And snakeslane, to be a combination of Debra Winger and Cher with your lovely personality is awesome. BTW, Cher loaned me way more than plether and feathers so we'll hook you up!
Becky, I love country too. Peg, would you please select something nice for us to listen to... Johnny Cash, maybe?
Thanks Mar. It was the hair (bangs) long hair and the big nose.
I remember that movie, so stupid it was funny.
I still have the long hair. but no bangs. Mine is to my waist and Katy keeps trying to get me to cut it off. NO, NO, NO!!!!! When it is as soft and no-care as mine is, you leave it alone. It is naturally curly and you can do soo many things with it.
Nice Becky. I still have long hair too.
No bangs. Thinking may be time for a makeover at Peg's Disco themed Hair Salon.
Hi mckbirdbks. Hope you're having a good evening.
You know I couldn't figure who you reminded me of snakeslane, but now you mention it, yes Debra Winger definitely
I don't think I looked like anyone but me Lol I'll put a younger photo of me up then you can see, just plain old me.
Oh and that PVC stuff, looked good at the time but oo hot for dancing in lol.
Only thing changes on me is the hair gets greyer, the glasses change, and a few more wrinkles. Especially the wrinkles, the last few years.
Aww, nice younger you Rosemay, so pretty! Cool looking dress, big smile. :)
The younger version of Debra Winger. We both wore the big glasses. Now I just look old...
She still has the smile. She just cut her hair.
I forgot what Rosemay looks like, been looking at that Big dog and baby (Hunter) picture for weeks.
That is funny. You are full of them tonight.
Haha Please don't mistake me for the dog Lol
Yeah my hair was long and dark now its short and blonde,l grey under the blonde though Lol Becky
Not wrinkle Becky just laughter lines
Good morning everyone,
Catch a few winks and look what I missed - Poplar trees made into steps, that sounds so beautiful Becky. Rosemay is that your disco dress? You are beeuteeful. Snakeslane, you do look like Debra Winger - I love her. Maria, you are related to Cher? And I liked that Wong Foo movie too, sista.
Is anyone having breakfast? I hope Hyphen is okay this morning. The day after is usually pretty bad. We had a tornado here in 2004. We were lucky. The neighbors around us weren't.
Good Morning All...Really cold day today..Could really use a cup of coffee..will just sit over here and try to stay warm.
Mike, Gregory Peck? Much better than Sonny. mmmm Pie. The day of the "straight line winds" we were both out of town - I was in Florida and Jim in Boston. He got a call from a friend who said, "Hey, did you know your house is on the news?" Not a good thing. My Mom left a voice mail message that went, "Well, no matter what you see on the TV, we're still here." Click, hang up. Whaaaat?
Sista, that is such a 'Mom' remark, along with the accompanying phone click!
Oh my gosh, peach pie and Gregory Peck in the house all at once? I'm with you, Peg. I 'BELIEVE' it's high time for a break with some hot chocolate please (note that Cher song, ya'll..., it's just in my blood)!
Oh, and the hair color ... only my hair dresser knows for sure!
Good morning mckbirdbks and entourage. All chippy this winter day I see. Woke up to fluffy blanket of snow. Oh boy. No gardening today.
Sunnie, come on over and sit with me and get warm. Mar, you know that is truly a "Mom-ism" and here's one of my favorites from young Mr. Cash http://youtu.be/wEV58ztuihs
Hope you like it too.
Just realized, am not a ringer for Debra Winger, it was Margot Kidder (Lois Lane in Superman) my bad. All better now, so happy we got that cleared up.
Maybe both? More to come...maybe do a hub on Hub Pages celebrity look-a-likes? Ok Mckbirdbks, you've got Sonny Bono covered.
Well, I listened to Johnny Cash, tried to chat up the locals, but not getting much response here, think I shall come back later, have a great Saturday all.
Thanks Peg..I feel better all ready!Snakeslane its funny I have never been told I look like anyone but I do have several twins running around on this earth..lol
Sunnie, There's a TV newscaster that looks like you but I can't remember her name. I'll write it down next time I see her. Everytime I say, "Hey, that's Sunnie!"
Snakeslane, I was just in the kitchen whipping up some banana bread. Want some?
lol...well that is something! haha Peg..Just made a cream of cabbage soup..YUMMY! But Banana bread sounds better..:)
Cabbage soup! Mmmmmm. That sounds warm and delicious. The bread will be out in 7 minutes. Let's make a fresh pot of coffee while everyone's out. Mike said to help ourselves, right?
Yes..he does not mind at all..he must be out walking the dogs! :)
Hey Peg is it cold up there in Dahlas like here in central Texas?
Sunnie, it's a beautiful sunny (tee hee) day about 60 degrees. Gorgeous weather. I'm north east of Dallas near Farmersville. How about you?
It's 37 degrees in central TN, at least it is sunny and not precipitating. I hope Earl got the virtual wood stove going. It is the weather for it.
Cream of cabbage soup? Sounds interesting. I just got done making some of my famous cheesy potato soup. Full of chunks of ham.
Peg, I love banana bread. Made some last week when the bananas did not get eaten fast enough. So, why was your house on the news? I would be dialing mom's number right back.
Hyphen was on here yesterday morning, saying they were fine and getting help with tree removal. She answered some comments on her hubs yesterday. That is all I have heard.
It is warming up now and a beautiful day almost 65. I am outside of Austin near Killeen
Hi Ya'll,
Sista, you have made me melt on this freezing day in PA (low 30s) with my favorite Johnny Cash song. He looks like such an innocent baby as well ... but we all know boys will be boys!
Oohh, way too much thinking for a Saturday. Peg, I'll write you later after I review some students' papers.
I am hereby taking a break and helping myself to some leftover mac and cheese, maybe with some of that banana bread? That wood stove feels great!
Hi Becky, Send some of that cheesy potato soup over here. Virtual soup just doesn't stick to the ribs and I'm still hungry. Have some of this banana bread too.
The news crew had set up in our yard since we were the only ones on four sides that didn't have major damage. My 24' shed was blown into the back of the garage but chairs were still sitting on our front porch. The neighbor's mobile home had been thrown 60 feet across the road with them inside. My Mom's double wide had split down the middle with her napping inside and the windows of her car blew out. The guys beside her had their roof lifted and on the other side their house was completely totalled. Yep, I was on the phone immediately. Friends came and put our fence back up for our dogs who had been outside during all this. Mom was dog sitting.
Oh my God, poor Mom, poor doggies ... I would have hung that phone up too! Take her some soup, Sista. Give those dogs some treats and hugs.
Mar, Did you like the movie "Walk the Line"? It is one of my favorites. He was not too innocent according to the stories. I love Reese Witherspoon. Please have some bread. I'm off to write a new hub. Mike has himself to blame for resurrecting this one. BFN Wait, Mike's back! Yeah!
It's up to 45 now Mike. It is as warm as it is going to get though. This time on, it only ever gets colder. I am leaving now to walk to the store while it is almost warm.
Cabbage soup and bannana bread yes please! Peg and Hyphenbird close calls, too close. Looking forward to reading all about it...later dudes off to do Saturday chores.
Sista,
I LOVED 'Walk the Line' - Mom did too. As usual, I bawled my eyes out and she sat stone faced in the theater but 'loved it'! And, you are correct, in that Johnny was a pretty bad boy most of his life ... June came 'closest', I guess, to taming him? Reese was awesome in the role (and others, I agree).
I am so intrigued by your new hub, Peg, ... hoping I can sing to it?
Yes, Mike, I'm the 'someone' who 'cleaned up' that mac and cheese, in more ways than one! Simply delicious, thanks! And I guess I'll take another piece of that banana bread. It's freezing for heaven's sake!
My beloved Saints and 49ers playing...anyone got any popcorn?
Yes its football...My late dad was a big Saints fan. I promised I would stand in for him come game day..Playoffs for the super bowel..No salt though..on the popcorn..haha Oh..dont eat the cabbage soup and Banana bread at the same time..may cause rather bad results..hahaha
Yes Sunnie, but I have Nachos also.
The van is at the mechanic's.
1.It is believed that it is too much oil, which shuts down the computer (courtesy of my son, who was borrowing it).
2.Leak in the radiator (which was not checked before they left for Nashville (he forgot).
3. Burnt out sensor, due to overheating.
4. Steering column broken up (my son changed the ignition switch).
He will never borrow it again. He also said he hadn't come over to work on it because he had written it off. Of course, it isn't his. He will also never work on it again because every one of those problems were caused by him, when he assured his dad that he could do the work.
The mechanic is looking for a used steering column and a new radiator and will fix the problems. He also said that even if it is older, it is well worth fixing.
Yes the Super Bowel is in Feb..thank you for the popcorn..I am afraid things are not looking good..SF 14 Saints 0
Becky Gosh sorry for your car troubles..:(
Mike I was going to mow today actually ended up warming up..may still get out there. We have some grass coming up but mostly to mulch the leaves..way too much to rake.
Hi all hope everyone is good today.
Peg and snakeslane that dress is actually a ‘lap lap’ which is like a sarong. You had to learn quickly how to tie them or you could be stood in your birthday suit.
Peg you had a lucky escape there, are you writing a hub about it?
I'll join you in a coffee and a slice of theat banana bread if I may and Is there any peach pie left Mike.
Loved Walk the Line. I have a few Johnny Cash CD's
Oh dear Becky, I wouldn't let him near the car again, I don't suppose he has offered to chip in to help pay for the repais.
Thanks for the nice post
No to all that asked. He has not offered to help pay for repairs. It has been broken for two months now and I have been walking to the grocery and every where else. I have had to rent a car on the first so that I can get my bills paid. He, on the other hand, got mad at us a week after it broke and has not called us or helped us with it in any way. I am really p.o.'d at him because he doesn't seem to care about us at all unless we can help him. He called me this last week for the first time and guess what? He wanted something. I want something too. I want my pots, pans, blankets, quilts, comforters and everything else that I have lent him back.
Back for a cup of coffee, please, Mike. Yark work today? Your comment about the Greeeen Acres really kicked in and that is the hub I just finished. Rosemay, Hi! I had a dress with that feature, instant wardrobe malfunction. My "tornado" story is old news from 2004, but maybe I'll still write about it. Hello Sunnie, football? Maria, I cried too. We have the movie dvd. Maybe I'll watch it while I eat some of that delicious peanut brittle. Becky, you poor dear. Car trouble is trouble indeed.
Hellooo, big dump of snow this afternoon, looks so pretty. Everything very quiet and muffled. So much snow that 'take-out' Chinese could not make it. Good thing I had cabbage soup, and saved Bannana bread. Glad to hear you van is fixable Becky. Nice you could get some yard work done mckbbks. All I could do was shovel off the deck and steps.
Mike 'lap lap' was a PNG term. It is a large piece of cloth, something like a tablecloth, Lol. you wrapped it around, doubled back at the front and tied it off in the middle at the front. It was the most comfortable thing to wear around home in 100 plus degrees.
All that snow must be a beautiful sight Snakeslane
Becky I do not blame you at all, kin can be so selfish at times. Until they want something
Yes mckbbks, I am fine, thanks for asking. Cats are all excited about the snow and driving me crazy going in and out.
My dog has to be drug outside when it snows to do his business. He doesn't like precipitation of any kind. If he hears thunder, you can't get him outside for hours.
I had a lap lap but they called it a wraparound. I loved mine. Of course, mine had cords that were used to tie it.
Yeah Becky I had a couple of wraparounds too, a lot safer. Lol. But so comfy when its hot
Hi Rosemay and Becky. What fun. I had a wrap around dress once. It was an 'easy' pattern to sew. I must find a picture of myself in a dress. I lived in a few hot climates briefly and you are right Rosemay, need to find something comfortable to wear in that kind of heat.
I had wraparound pants, shorts, skirts, and dresses. They were all so fun and comfy. The one wraparound dress I had, had straps that tied at the neck. Had to wear a belt with it or when you leaned over, you would show everybody, what you had under there.
Uh oh...Becky I'm sure you always behaved like a lady in your wrap around. Do you remember 'skorts'?
Of course, I always behaved like a lady. I wore a belt with mine so it would not gap open. And yes, I do remember skorts. My daughter had some when she was little. They were much nicer for a little girl to wear when playing than a dress. Then she wouldn't show her panties.
One little boy in her kindergarten class liked to look up little girls dresses. After she beat him up for it(she was not afraid, even then, to protect her body from peepers), she would not wear a dress to school without shorts on. She got in trouble with the school for beating the little boy up, but when I asked her in front of the principal, why she beat him up, she replied in her prim, little, indignant voice, "Mom, he was looking up my dress at my panties." That stopped her being in trouble and put him in trouble. No one had asked her why.
Good for her becky, she learned from a young age to stick up for herself.
'And' I hope the young culprit involved learned that guys just can't 'look up a gal's dress at her panties' without her explicit permission, Becky. Oh my heavens, thank goodness you asked her side of the story.
Rosemay, you were and still are beautiful. Forgive me but it looks as though you are posing in front of a shower curtain. It may be the hour that I am writing ...(being in the Mafia, I am always checking out the scene of the 'action')
Now skorts, I had a few ... that is past tense (LOL)!
I think I need some pancakes this morning, with some coffee. PA woke up to frost all about and a mighty cold day again, not 30 degrees yet.
Good Morning,
I will sit with Mar and enjoy some pancakes and coffee too..Hope everyone is well..Beautiful sunny day..suppose to reach 70..I will be outside for sure..
Hi Dear Sunnie,
I am so glad to hang out with you. I have not been doing as much reading and commenting as I like, due to classes, but want to catch up with your writing soon.
Now I have a hankering for some strawberries to go with those pancakes? How does that sound?
I'm also thinking that TX and CA temperatures are much sweeter at this time of year! Enjoy your day, ya'll!
Yummy strawberries sound wonderful! So happy to have breakfast with you..:) Will be working outside today but so happy I could say good morning. You TOO!!! ;)
Hi Mike, sunnie and mar hope everyone is well, it's cold here today but the sun is shining, we have just got back from a lovely walk by the river and I'm ready for a nice cup of coffee and one of Rose's raspberry pastries please. Enjoy your day!
Hi everybody
Haha mar not a shower curtain, they were a sheeny embossed material, quite heavy and the red banner is one of those 'Merry Christmas' things. I had just put it up and so was still standing on the chair when someone said turn around.
I think I'll join you with one of those raspberry pastries Lesley they look yum.
Mike do you have somewhere nice you can walk the dogs?
Good day all. Beautiful, sunny day here. Just wish it was warm enough to go out without layering.
Rosemary and Mar, with brothers 19 years older,10 years older and 9 years older, plus a sister 16 years older; Katy had to learn to defend herself with wit and spunk. They were always picking on her and teasing her. I also believe that it is always a good idea to ask a child WHY they do some things. It will amaze you at some of their answers and their reasoning.
'Walking a freight train' haha love it. at least you get some exercise.
2 squad cars, must have been looking for someone.
A weird thing happened to me yesterday. We often hear odd noises in the house. If we are in the lounge we now and then hear banging on the wall from the other side which is the dining room. We often hear strange noises coming from the conservertory but put it down to noisy neighbours. I was in the conserertory yesterday and heard the screen door shut, being metal it has a distinctive unmistakeable sound. I turned round thinking someone had come in... but nothing or no one there. strange
The first two are Dennis' and Katy was a surprise.
At least they weren't looking for you. Lol
Haha yeah they do seem to follow me around lol. I did write a hub and that was a scary experience. But this house does not feel uncomfortable or cold, so if it is a visitor they seem to be friendly. Lol
Hello people, Hello mckbirdbks, I hear you've been under close surveillance by the boys in blue. Zooming around the neighborhood like a runaway train is a reportable offense, no offense.
http://youtu.be/i1xSt7iganA Here's a song for you!
Or maybe you like this version?
Okey dokey. I left a comment on that hub for you about the drawing. Thanks for the great compliment. I took a couple of semesters in Fine Arts, design, drawing and painting at University way back when.
Loved this hub and several of its tributes to Texas. Loved the part when Lyndon threw the bottle out of the car and Lady Bird made big Ed stop so he could pick it up.
And the poetry readings were really cool.
Voted up across the board. This series is amazing!
Another great hub, and alot of fun at the cafe. I look forward to reading many more.
Hi Mck, I had to laugh at the "freight train" dog walking comment. Sounds like my old Buckwheat dog who used to play crack the whip with me holding on to her leash. She nearly outweighed me and required multiple walks daily as I had no yard at the time.
Could I please get one of those nice fresh pastries and a cup of coffee?
I am so pleased to see that Emerald Wells Café is still here, as are many of the interesting characters and patrons that share in the hub of life at the café…the same we share it here. The poetry was perfect and the Haikus…I especially liked this one:
The snow does drift high
Piling to the windows edge
But my heart is warm
Up, beautiful, and more. :-)
Good morning mckbirdbks, I've re-bult my drawing hub. Thank you so much for making the comments you did. I was able to make a much more accurate descrpition of the drawing exercise by going back over it.
I just stopped by and smelled fresh coconut cupcakes. I will take one and a couple dozen more to feed the people who are in the neighborhood cleaning up from the tornado. I have a front yard again but the back is still full of trees. But many others do not have homes so we are incredibly grateful.
Hello everyone.
Thanks, I've actually revised it again in the last few minutes. If you get a chance could you have a look. Pretty please.
Hi, all. I am alive, even if I haven't been here much. Studying again.
HI Becky,
Glad to see you!..have to head over and read your new hub! :) Miss you!
Oh wow I think we warmed up abit today but with over cast...Walking this morning was nice..not too cool..My legs said that we must do this more so going to try it again tomorrow..lol
Hi Mike. The class I am taking now is Creative Writing. I am even going to get graded on my hubs. The final assignment is to have a blog of other creative writing on a writing site. I asked if it had to be started new or if it could be a current one and the teacher said as long as it was active and had at least 5 articles on it. Two during class. Number one is up.
Hi all hope everyone is good. Just popping over to read becky's latest hub then I will be back for coffee and.... something SYS
Nice hub Becky, children are such wonderful entertainment. I have a similar hub half writte, not quite as tame as your though. Lol
I haven't told any of the wild tales of my boys. There is a statute of limitations. LOL!!! I can just see it. Their cell mate asks how they got caught and they get told, "My mommy told on me."
Coconut cupcakes sounds great thanks Mike.
Haha Becky my son was not wild but a real prankster.
My notifications are coming in late, about 10 hours after a hub has been published.
I think HP may be so big now that it just can't cope.
I haven't gotten notified yet that people commented on one of my hubs yesterday. They need to get another server if theirs can't handle it.
Mine didn't pull pranks, at least, not where I found out about it. They did get wild a few times.
hay Becky I am still finding out things I never knew
Hi Ya'll,
I hope I'm not too late for a coconut cupcake and a cup of mint tea. I am ready to relax after reviewing some rather lengthy class papers. And, Becky, they were not creatively written, for the most part!
Oh, I love that Johnny Cash song, snakeslane... his version better than Joaquin's, yet both are awesome. Thanks so much.
Have a warm and cozy night everyone. Hugs, mar.
Hello mar hope all is well with you, the coconut cupcakes are delicious
Becky I just now received notification that Peg had commented on
here, and that was 13 hours ago
This doesn't even show on my feed. I had to check to see if I was following.
Yes talk about a time warp, the difference in time is bad enough without the help of HP.
You know what its like when you a big group around a dinner table and suddenly someone bursts out laughing because they only just got the joke that was told 2 hours ago? Well that is sort of what it is like for me, if I want to comment of a conversation it is 8, 9 or even more hours after and it looks a bit silly.
Rosemary I am so slow at jokes that I am that person in real life so trying to keep up on hubs is like listening to a joke and getting it 15 minutes later EVERYDAY!!!..lol
Hi Ya'll,
OK, who thinks of 'Rocky Horror' (PEGGY???) with the expression 'time warp'? Oh my, that would be such a Halloween theme for the Cafe, oh sorry, what was I thinking... lemme get back to these !@#$% papers!
Rosemay and Sunnie, I am usually a day behind getting the joke and I sure can't tell one to save my soul! Aren't we a mess (hee-hee!)? I guess Comedy Night would come off kinda goofy as a 'pilot study'... might need extra tea in the cups to start.
While, I'm here, might as well enjoy a cheese danish and a cup of coffee, please?
Save the search....1975... 'Time is fleeting!'
True confessions: night after night, after working at FWWoolworth's my pals and I saw the Midnight show of RHPS, putting on our costumes (yes, Sista, I was Magenta) and schlepping in TP, newspaper, rice, OMG... I love that movie and dance to this day...
Peg, when you have a moment, you know what we need on the old jukebox. I know you have much on your plate so take your time!
OK, Mike, I am known for my 'A's... this sounds like a good strategy. Thanks!
Mckbirdbks! My friend Leroy is a great friend of Michelle Obama. He really loves Emerald Wells Cafe and said to me that he is going to recommend it to the FLOTUS!
The White House Kitchen is grand but there is nothing like the smell of fresh brewed coffee and the taste of coconut cupcakes at the Emerald Wells Cafe!
I agree with Dex..It smells soo good in here..Can i have a coconut cupcake and lots of hot coffee. The wind was blowing so hard last night it woke me up, nothing wakes me up so you know it was fierce. Did you all watch Betty White's birthday party on TV last night? It was so good..She's amazing, witty at 90 years old. She really looked better than Mary Tyler Moore. I'm listening to The Fontain Sister's Daddy O..That's one i never heard of, it's got a good beat..YaYaYaYea something like that...cheers
Hello all you cheerful people. When I woke up I thought it was Fri. 13th again. Water froze overnight, it is well below freezing here and supposed to get colder tonight. Plumber is on the way to rescue me I hope. Darn, should have left the tap running, but I thought I had heat tape, my bad.
Lucky I have neighbor across the street for water for cofee and cats. I can go there anytime. She is a very good neighbor to have in an emergency that's for sure.
Hi all, finally finished schoolwork for the day. This is a fun class. We had thunder this morning. A little rain but not much.
A plumber will defrost them and put the heat tape on so it does not happen again. They put a heater under the house and run it until they defrost. They will also fix any pipes that break because they froze. Water expands when it turns to ice. I have had that happen and it is no fun.
That is the reason I now live in an apartment. I got fed up with the landlord when he took two weeks to get the frozen pipes fixed and I had no water for that entire time, at Christmas. I moved the 1st. He wasn't poor, just cheap.
Plumber is here. Water is running. He used a torch on the intake where it froze. I thought I had heat tape. He is installing that now. Whew! close call.
Hello everyone! I'm so glad to find out that notifications are taking a long time. I was just wondering why my views are so bad today and no one had looked at my latest music hub. Hint hint. Mar, I hope you find a song in there that you like. Mike, the cupcakes are so yummy I think I'll have another, please? Peg
Snakeslane, do you want me to bring you a thermos of hot Coco? If you are like me..I am out there watching..glad it is fixed. Hi Earl..coffee for me..parents coming over for a visit so thought I would get my visiting done now..Hope everyone is well!
Thanks, Sunnie, got a coffee, yes, been in and out, wearing my big sweater, sun is shining, t's quite nice really, now that the water is running again!
Thats good! We had one frozen pipe this year.
Glad you're defrosted and no broken pipes. It can be miserable having no water.
Oh my word. I just got a much need laugh from Sunnie's Angry Birds hub. Thanks I needed that. Mar, I'll have to watch RHPS again to see Magenta. Darnit, Jarnit!
Hi everyone hope all is well with the world.
Glad to hear the water problems are fixed Snakeslane. And teachers and students are all up to date and surrounded by 'A's
Peg I will be over soon to read/listen to your music hub
Sunnie enjoy your visit with your parents.
Mike you are such a tolerant host. I could eat some bacon and eggs this morning I am famished, and coffee please... take your time Lol
I had such a shock when I looked out of the window this morning, I thought it had been snowing. A paper products factory about 3 miles from us set on fire last night and everywhere is covered with paper ash. The garden, driveway, the car, trees. So J has been out hosing down
Then we learn that we had a 4.7-magnitude earthquake too at just after 4am. never felt a thing slept through it.
Another exciting day in Sunny Hawkes Bay. Lol
At the street what mckbirdbks?
Ok yes it was frozen at the shut off valve to the house not at the street. Wish I was there, lol.
Summer now Mike, summer starts Dec 1st. Just amazed at how the wind must have carried all the ash all this way.
We get earthquakes around this level on a regular basis
This bacon and eggs was just what I needed thanks.
Oh wow, Rosemay, an earthquake And a fire!
Earthquakes are no big deal to me. I lived in El Centro. I moved there and we had 2, over 7.0 within 48 hours. I was ready to move again.
And I would rather live where it is cold. It kills all the insects off so there aren't as many. Fleas are the pits. I pray for at least two good weeks of below freezing. It makes the summers much nicer. If you just leave the water dribbling, the pipes won't freeze. Or have heat tape on the pipes.
Hi Becky, yes, I should have left some water running. Now I have pipe insulated and heat tape. All better now, no damage. I may leave water on tonight supposed to drop to -11 (celsius) you do the math ha ha.
That's about 13 degrees Fahrenheit, looked it up.
I'd leave my water running at that temp. snakeslane. Glad it's you and not me. I wouldn't live up there anyway because it is too cold. My poor husband would be stuck in the house all winter with his Kevlar nose. It gives him headaches if his nose gets cold.
I have just been reading about these strange humming sounds that are being heard in the Northen hemesphere, have any of you experienced these sounds.
That's not good. Ouch.
Hey there Mck! Nice to see you. Was about to send out a search party for you earlier. Here we were carrying on and eating up all the cupcakes. Rosemay will be staring in the movie 2012 part 2 with all that's going on around her. Yikes. Snakes, it's supposed to get in the 20s here tonight. I converted it to Celsius (-6.6) Yowser. Brrrr.
Wow, that is cold too!
Here is the strange noise thing
http://dorsi.hubpages.com/hub/Strange-sounds-in-th
I'm up for more cupcakes please. I should have been writing today but not a single word crossed this mouse.
Wow! Spooky sounds! Thanks for the link Rosemay!
Yep very spooky snakeslane especially if you follow that up with Vincent Moore's (Saddleriders) Deep in the Shadows
Enough for one day. I need to go back to pegs for some light entertainment.
Hi Mckbirdbks, I was thinking the illustrations you did for my gardening Hub have a very 'New Yorker' feel to them, especially the guy on the ladder.
Good Morning, Ya'll,
I think Rosemay has the right idea. Bacon and eggs sound great this morning with some that great coffee, please and thank you!
Peg, had a moment to briefly visit your hub last night and found plenty to love! Call me 'CRAZY...'!! I look forward to going back and listening when I am off this 'class jag' later in the week.
Hope everyone has a fabulous day. Hugs, mar.
Hello and good morning,
I just wanted to stop in and smell the coffee before dashing out for a while. Will be back to enjoy some late lunch. Hope everyone is well. Mar, thanks for the visit and hope you got a good night's sleep. Mck, you are definitely in the category of the illustrators for the New Yorker. Yes indeed. We are among some really talented folks here.
See you all soon I hope. Peg
Good Morning,
A very chilly morning 30 degrees! Hope everyone is doing good this morning!
Hi Mike, morning girls hope everyone is fit and well, just come from Peg's brilliant hub, it stirred up some great memories! I'll have a cup of coffee and one of Roses's delicious smelling pastries please. It's mild here this morning, temperature has just gone up 10 degrees!
Good afternoon all. It's noon here and only 28 degrees. I have to be out in it for a while today and not looking forward to freezing. Could I get a cup of hot tea and a Long John please?
Hi all, hope everyone is good. Becky that sounds cold, not to rub it in but it is 82 here, should come over to my place for the winter. Lol
A coffee plase and a blueberry muffin please Mike. I am now wondering what a 'Long John' is apart frm the pirate or long undies
Hi Mike it has warmed up here too..I think about 68 which is nice and very sunny. Hope everyone's day is going well..
A large Ice tea would be so nice..thanks :)
LOL!!! A Long John is a raised doughnut, about 4 inches long and 2 inches wide. It has a Bavarian Cream filling (like pudding). Then they cover it with chocolate frosting. No bacon, no maple frosting(ugh). They are sinfully good and my favorites.
I am back, by the way. I walked to the store and it wasn't as bad as I thought. I layered, so I stayed warm. It is now up to 35, which is the high for the day.
Hi guys, Becky is right again re: long john.
Another cold day here, but bright and sunny with a breeze so I am burning stuff in the fire pit. Business papers from 10/15 years ago. Why did I keep these so long? Piling up and taking up valuable real estate? No idea. Going, going, gone.
Oh, how sweet. Mike won't argue with me. Now all I have to do is convince my children how informed I am. lol I get the Long Johns at Wal-marts bakery. They are wonderful and I have only seen one or two bakeries that do not know what they are.
The Long John sounds nice Becky, if Earl already had some made I'll try one of those please Mike.
Is Rose still on holiday? Sunning it up somewhere.
Mind you the bacon one could be nice too, maybe earl could make us a taster.
Be nice to have everyone back, and looking forward to meeting the new chracters.
Is the February Speakeasy going to be a Valentines day one?
Hi mckbbks et al. Sorry I can't help you with the balance, but I wish you luck with that and looking fwd to your new hub.
Glad you like the new pastry. We all need something new occasionally. The others sound good except for the maple. The only maple I like is syrup. lol!
Looking forward to your hubs any time you get them out. I have to write another one soon. First I have to get an idea.
Oh well, I'm sure the 'girl's won't mind being outnumbered.
The women are not outnumbered at the cafe. It is mostly ladies who visit.
Good Morning, Ya'll,
Hope everyone is fine on this sunny and chilly morning in PA. I plan to be a bum today and meet a girlfriend for lunch, so I think I'll just take some coffee and listen to the jukebox awhile. 'All work and no play'...
I have really loved seeing how the Cafe has evolved with time and new characters. What a successful story (just like soap operas) where the audience (you know all of us chicks with the wild opinions on what music belongs in the jukebox with no attention to time detail) 'tells' the writer what we think, every chance we get! Mike, thank you for always being patient with my odd requests. For today, I'll cut you a break!
Hoping everyone is good to themself today. Thinking of you, Peggy -- check in when you can. Hugs, Maria
Greetings Cafe friends. I actually have a few minutes before it all begins over. But things are falling into place. The insurance adjuster has been out and wrote me a check. We escaped the tornado unscathed compared to most of our neighbors but the damage is still almost $7,000. Now to find a roofer. I will need coffee and one of those Long Johns for that mission.
Good morning Hyph..Glad they have handled this so fast although I know it may not seem like it..Hope you find a reasonable roofer and can pocket some of it..
Not only was your Hub a Fun, Wonderful read, (as usual) but the Comments are as well Mckbirdbks. You hit a Home Run with this one my Friend. It's like an extention of the Cafe, no one wants to leave...It's so Cosy here!
You are right mckbirdbks. No anger here. I am a happy bird:)
Just got back from my walk..twice around this time..WOW! haha Off to take mom to an appt so wishing you all a great day..Mike you are so right..Hyph is so not an angry bird..but I bet she has some spunk being raised with all those boys..lol HI HYPHEN!!! :)
Hello mckbirdbks, it's exciting that both Becky and I got our images on the 'Topics' page with you. (Mine is top of the page under 'Art & Design') Cool!
Mike, I loved that story. Are you publishing it? I wouldn't mind reading it again.
snakeslane, What you talkin' bout girl. I have to go see.
Hi Becky, did you see it?
Yeah, I saw it. I saw Sunnie is on there twice, Ghost32 is on there for his 4 year hub, and a bunch of my other friends are on there.
Nice!
First time for me...
Rosemay was on there too. I showed Katy and she did a screenshot and put it on her Tumbler page. First time for me too.
Sweet! Congratulations!
I don't often go there so never know who is up there. I see Sof's has a 'featured' article. I see Mar is in there too
Mike you are very tolerant of us all with our requests for music or new pastries etc.
A brother and sister sounds good. I'll get Earl busy and order bacon and eggs again please and my usual coffee.
Very peaceful here nothing out of the ordinary happening now we have all the ash cleared away and all is back to normal.
I was happy to see that. I was worried the drawing would be too faint an image, but it looks alright. Yay!
Are you still deep in the proof reading and writing a new Hub mckbirdbks, or just walking the dog?
It is in Topics, under books and literature.
yours is second hottest Mike. B Malin has 2 up there.
My good manners is up there too. Peg is hottest in the music.
What a talented group we are
Mike if you just click on 'Topics' right at the top there and then you can click on the various catagories.
I am busy typing away now so will be sending it to you soon.
Hi all, a wonderful evening. I was just reading something and thought of a bunch more wild tales of my boys. I need to think of something my daughter did. She is feeling neglected because she was not in this last one. I think they got into more because there were two of them so close in age, egging the other one on.
My boys got caught. They weren't even sneaky about it. Katy does the stuff, I think, but doesn't seem to get caught.
Off to another appt with my parents this morning...coffee to go would be oh so nice..when do you think is a good time publish Valentine hubs..early or nearer to time when the flood gates open? Just curious...Hope every one has a great day.
Sunnie
PS Girls are way more sneaky! I had two of each..the boys just got caught! :)
Good Morning, Ya'll,
I think I will take some very strong coffee as my play day is over.
I must say I agree with Sunnie with our current stream of discussion... I think boys get caught all the time, just an armchair observation.
Hope everyone has a very peaceful day, mar.
My son was a prankster, he wasn't sneaky, he did it quite openly. Lol
I don't think boys think, they just react. Hi all!!
Ah boys will be boys, they just like to have fun. And no matter how maddening it can be at the time it is usually a laughable story later on and certainly fodder for times such as celebrations.
Hello Mck and friends, Trying to get caught up here after being out for a couple of days. I'm getting addicted to the coffee at the cafe so I had to drop in for a cuppa. Rosemay, Wow, I hadn't seen the music topic hit thing until you mentioned I was on it. Neat! Mar, hey and thanks for the kind thoughts and prayers. All is well.
I will never forget my aunts and uncles sitting around the campfire telling stories about things they had done. There were 12 of them. My grandmother was sitting there sounding like a parrot, "I didn't know you did that", over and over.
It was funny Mike. She didn't think so. She thought she kept them under control, but they seem to have slipped the leash frequently.
Mck, You draw a colorful and talented crowd with that special coffee you serve. Mm-mm good. It is nice to be home tonight where things feel "almost" normal.
Becky, When my brother visits and we start talking about the stuff we did as kids, my Mom does the parrot thing too! Exactly the same words. Funny now.
Hi all, It seems from my experience that some of the stories come out eventually, but personally, I wish I had known more at the time. As for my own close calls, I never did share them with my parents, seemed better to just let bygones be bygones.
Oh mckbirdbks you are such a funny guy. Are you here tonight or just flying in and out under the radar?
Both coffee and company are special, Mck. Ms. Lane, hey! Missed you guys. It's been a long day. Gotta go. Hope to drop in tomorrow.
Hi all (waves around the room)
Haha your thoughts were running along the same line as mine Mike. Just maybe it's this special coffee that makes us talented and colourful. Lol.
I am still finding out about things mine got up to and yes I repeat that phrase too. See ya later Peg
Hi .mckbbks. I am trying to get to Calgary within next few days. But bad news tonight . Brother is in surgery at Calgary Hospital. He called ambulance earlier today. I am still waiting to hear anything
Hospital contact mckbirdbks. He is in a Recovery room now waiting for a bed (post surgery). I'm to call back in an hour.
Hi mckbirdbks. We (family) are all on the coast. I offered to go last week, but he asked me to wait. Thank you for positive energy, I (we) need it.
So far just me.
I will look that up!
Completely lost here mbbks...
Brother is recovering from surgery...Yay! Was not too major. I am exhausted ...later dudes.
I am glad your brother is in recovery, hope everything works out good. I am glad they figured out what was wrong. Last I heard, he was sick and having tests. They didn't know what was wrong. Prayers are with you both. Him for healthy, speedy recovery from surgery and you for your nerves and worry.
Fantastic story. Thumbs up!!!
Good Morning, Ya'll,
I am hoping that snakeslane was able to get some rest and that your brother makes a good recovery. My thoughts are with you both.
I need to find Baby's snow boots, as we are surrounded by a blanket of the dreaded 'wintery mix'. I think I'll stay for some hot chocolate before getting started.
Peggy, come join me and take a few extra minutes for yourself. You've been going a 'mile a minute'. Rosemary, thanks for helping me guard against those sneaky viruses. I think I 'threw a virtual antibiotic' in its direction thanks to your help!
Hope everyone has a good day, mar.
Good Morning everyone....cold one today! Just some coffee would be nice..Hope everyone has a great day..Hope your brother is doing better Snakeslane..:) Mar did you find Baby's boots? We had a cocker spaniel when I was little that had red snow boots...lol
Hi everyone. Just popping in long enough to let you know we are doing well. The tarp on the roof is keeping the house dry and hopefully the repairs can begin early next week. The governor has declared this a disaster area so people can get 2% loans and/or grants. Since I cannot qualify for a loan (nor do I want one) I was qualified for a grant. I should know soon how much we will receive. I plan to use much of it to plant trees this Spring since we no longer have any.
So what does Rose have fresh? It is nice that she is in here now. Coffee? Sure and lots of it. I need to get warm.
I have been out in the cold rain gathering supplies. Who knew one would be willing to pay $5 for a roll of toilet paper? Thankfully a church is giving out that sort of thing.
Hello everyone, I'll have coffee and a bear claw too, they are soo good. I'm going to go shopping today. I said, ( Ruby you need a break ) I'v read so many poems, i am starting to talk in rhyme fashion..Hee.. Hyphen i remember well the day we had a tornado, the clean-up is not fun. People who jack the prices up after a disaster are the worst..Have a good day....
Good morning mckbbks et al. Last night there were two posts on feed, this one and just above was another you commented on mckB and I replied to the wrong thread. That is when I knew for sure it was time to call it a night. The brother scenerio did have a happy outcome late last night, after 7 hours of phone calls and not knowing, stressful. Thank y'all for kind thoughts.
Morning all
Hope your brother is recovering well sankeslane and you are having a good rest.
Pleased you have your computer under control again Mar
I think dogs look so cute in snowboots, I knit doggie jumpers and sell them, sometime to order and the sizes I get sometimes makes me wonder just what their dogs look like, so often have to ask for a photo. I had quite a few orders for jumpers in sports colours last winter. and a tuxedo for a doggie wedding.
When we had a huge rainforest tree come down in an earthquake it was sliced up and friends had some beautiful table made.
I'll have a coffee please Mike and a pancake stack thanks.
That is really nice..Thanks for that
Hi,everybody. Glad your brother is doing better snakeslane.
Hyphen, glad your staying dry. Happy to hear you will get some new trees. I would get a fruit tree or two and some flowering trees. They are so beautiful. My mom had a dark pink Rose of Sharon out by her back door. We could see it through the kitchen window and it was so beautiful.
Mck, could I please get a bear claw and some hot tea? I am freezing today. Hope I am not coming down with something. I hate being sick.
I had to come back and retract my comment about shopping..I went outside, the wind almost blew me away and it must be in the 20's, so i'm staying in where it's warm..Mck are you going to tell us about your poem you wrote while coming home from the post office? See ya later...
Hi mck bbks, I left a message here 3 hours ago, not sure if you saw it.
Sorry 4 hours ago.
Thanks Mcmbbks trip is planned yes. Just working out the details.
Wow, I am really slaughtering your name here!
Haha yes Kim Dotcom That spoiled his birthday party
Doggie jumpers I sell on an auction site. 3 or 4 a week can't knit more than that Lol.
Another quake this morning 8.49 was a bit scary, the whole hove shook
Trying to learn how to make a video to put on youtube now
Quake was 4.3
8.49 was the time Lol I thought it might be read wrong Lol No quake was only 4.3, didn.t stop me typing.
Yes I wouldn't mind living in that mansion, very nice. Big deal having the FBI over here in little ole NZ Lol
I have got one youtube video up 2 or 3 more then I will do a hub. Only songs with slideshows though, I don't have a camcorder so no video.
No way will I be making a hub on how to do it Lol
Now that would be a lot of work keeping those grounds in trim.
Here it is, don't laugh
I used my own images, was a little worried about using others on there and copy content
I really enjoyed reading this hub. It gave me a lovely little break from my crazy day. Thanks for all the work you put into it. You did a terriffic job.
Rosemay,
You did a fantastic job showcasing this upcoming musician! I also love your photography. I've shared on FB so maybe more folks will appreciate his music, mar.
Rosemary I loved the youtube video..very enjoyable..such a nice voice and lovely pictures too..Thanks
Thanks everyone and thank you for sharing Mar. I don't think he ever made it outside New Zealand which is a shame beacause he has a lovely voice.
The photos are mostly from my garden and the frangipani a friend in Australia sent me. Beaches i in Assie and the other is Fiji.
I really need to start taking more photos to use.
I would love a chocolate chip cookie and some nice tea, Mike! Thank you very much, so delicious!
Hi all. Hey Ms RoseMay, I have a link for world earthquake map. you can watch them live! Let me know if you want, I could leave link. Glad to hear was not 8+ that's too big. You tube home movie, song is very nice.
Hi snakeslane. I think the experience is enough, not sure I want to watch them live haha. Not an 8 I confused everyone there even myself lol
thanks for watching the youtube video
Mike it works both ways, when it is winter here I can catch some sunshine and blooms here.
I'll have one of those choc chip cookies please and a coffee.
Then I guess I'll be saying good night to you.
Thanks for the cookies, I'll keep popping back when I feel like a nibble... :-)
Thats an awful lot of debris. It is so nice for you to be thinking about planting and spring on the way. I don't think you get any frosts there do you? thats what does the main damage to seedlings.
Good Morning,
Hope everyone is well..Hi Mike just a cup of coffee and some toast. You are up early for a Sunday morning..I am sure the dogs are wanting to go out so no sleeping in huh? Have a great day!
Good Morning, Ya'll,
I will agree these cookies are amazing! I think I'll have some with my buddy Rosemay and maybe you can take a break from the clean-up and join us, Mike? Great to see you, Sunnie!
I sure hope everyone is well and has a happy day, mar.
Hi Mike and everybody, I hope you are all well and Rio enjoyed the walk! A cup of coffee please and I'll try some of these cookies, then I'm off to check out Genna's hub, enjoy your day!
Morning all, I sit here wuth mar, Sunnie and lesley. Coffe and toast please and why don't you sit and join us now Mike.
Do you have to go plant shopping today? My garden isn't doing so well it doesn't matter what I do, I got trailer loads of soil in but it is still like clay. The marigolds seem to love it.
We had laugh with the carrots, they just didn't sem to be growing right. Then I looked at the sed packet which I had kept for some unknown reason to find that they were not the usual carrots but round ones, something like mini pumpkin. not quite the same Lol
Thank you for doing the illustrations for my latest hub, they look great, you are a talented man my friend. Very much appreciated.
Good morning Mckbs, your gardening stories are so interesting. Heading now to new Rosemay Hub WITH illustrations, can't wait!
Rosemary, My dad had clay and fixed it by adding ground diatomaceous earth. It is called floor-dry to soak up grease on garage floors and is what kitty litter is made from. I will loosen up that clay and make it more workable. He used quite a bit because he got it free. He used to work at a plant that mined it and called his old boss, who gave it to him. He used several 50 lb bags. I found it for sale by searching for it.
Thanks Mike cutting the bottoms off the containers sinking the whole thing sounds like a good idea. I have done a lot of container planting and they are going well.
My son was a picky eater, hated all vegies, my daughter would try anything once.
Oh, Hi all, I don't know what I am thinking, I didn't even say hello. I am ready for some special coffee and a big breakfast. I can't eat for a couple hours after I wake up and now I am starving for breakfast food. Sausage, eggs over medium, hashbrowns, biscuits and gravy please. I am going to balloon up from all that but at least it is virtual calories.
I was up til 4:00 this morning, writing a paper. Now I am going to edit it and make sure everything makes sense and is cited. Have to turn it in tonight.
Thanks becky have just googled diatomaceous and it is about US$10 a lb which would be expensive to do the whole garden. We have dug a heap of compost in, looking at the soil I would guess that at some point someone has just put a heap of chimpings down. We did build some raised garden for the vegie plots and they seem to be doing OK.
I saw some for $27 for 50lb. But then there is shipping. Doesn't matter what grade it is. What is chimpings? Never heard that word. Raised gardens are nice. If you build them narrow, you can sit on the edge and weed. I can't do the knees thing anymore. Messed them up standing on concrete floor working. Just about to need surgery on them.
Hi guys,
Just throw in my two cents..haha we are going to do a verticle garden this year since we have the chickens and will have to put fence around it..Alot smaller than in the past. I thought the verticle may be easier on the back too...I cant wait until spring.
Becky chimpings are tiny stones, you may call it something different.
Yep Mike raised beds for vegies, down one side of the house I have laid chimpings and shrubs in pots. I planted a few succulents too, they don't mind this soil.
Sunnie the verticle garden sounds like a good idea.
We call it gravel.
A fine addition into the Emerald Wells Cafe history. I liked the Big Ed character, very well written. As for the poems...it was a close call between Richard and Dale's...but in the end I favor Dale's poem more. Sounds like a very fun Speakeasy Night which has a lot in common with this hub. Great job.
Morning Mike, how are you today.
I'll have a coffee and cupcake please
I was just reading about the Palestinian girl who was locked in a bathroom for 9 years. Shocking how humans can do this sort of thing
We were supposed to be having a day out today but its not too warm here either.
Balance yes... just read tammyswallows 'A Disturbing Flaw in Disney's Movie Beauty and the Beast' and had a couple of chuckles.
I did check out Cogerson's Top 100 Movies Of All-Time as well. too much to take in in just one go.
Good Morning Mck, It took me so long to get here, i almost ran out of gas. HaHa.I think i'll have pancakes and coffee. It's supposed to be warmer here today with a chance of rain..We had a storm come through the night it hit Alabama, strong wind, no damage. I talked with my Son Jack yesterday and he tells me that he has flower sprouts coming up, so spring is on the way..Yea..He lives in Arkansas, He's usually a month ahead of me. Take care..Have a good one...
Oh, make that two customers, as I join Ruby for some pancakes as well. That sounds yummy!
It almost feels balmy today in the low 40s, with the sun brightly shining. I'm afraid we won't see the 70s any time soon...
Hope ya'll have a lovely day, whatever this day may bring, mar.
Hi all. Coffee and pastry for me please. Hope everyone is well
It was a beautiful day here yesterday so we took a day off and went tripping around, up a mountain and then to the beach, gathered some photos for a future hub. A perfectly relaxed day.
Hi everyone, I can't come by for a couple of days and so nobody comes by. The place is deserted except for Rosemary. Cheer me up and talk some nonsense stuff for me please.
Hi Becky,
I am back here in the back folding napkins...Earl said he was alittle behind so I thought I would help...Come sit...I have a couple jokes..if I can remember the punch lines..lol..
OH NO!!! I think I may have ate one of them..Shhhh dont tell Rose..maybe she will not notice...:(
You two are so cute. Yes, Sunnie did a beautiful job on her hub. She is so sweet and helpful. I am giggling over you two and the cupcakes though. I will end up giving it away for you two.
Oh my, what is Rose going to say, there are only 3 Valentine cupcakes left... and you think she might not notice... haha
Sorry to hear you had a bad week Becky, hope things are perking up.
I am just catching up on some reading, there seems to be a frenzy going on
Has snakeslane gone to stay with her brother do you know? I hope he is OK
I know nothing!
Prayers going up for Snakeslane...Rosemary..I meant I knew nothing about the cupcakes...that sounded bad had to explain..:)
Sunnie, it is nice to see you here. We haven't seen you much lately.
Has anyone heard how Brenda is doing?
Rosemary, thanks for my emails. They were cute.
Yes, Mike, Fresh cupcakes are much better. I made a cupcake birthday cake for Katy yesterday. Red cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and red sprinkles. I can't remember what kind of cake it was but it was the armadillo grooms cake in Steel Magnolias.
Red Velvet cake. I remembered.
Good Morning,
Enjoy the auction! Col Klink right? I loved that show! hahaha.. Have a great day..no word from Brenda I need to email her..she has been on my heart..
You are Right!...haha
I know I wrote something here a little bit ago. Must have forgotten to push the Post button. LOL! Bad weeks affect me that way. Good afternoon all.
Morning all. I knew what you meant Sunnie.. :-)
My thoughts are with snakeslane and her brother.
We all get those weeks Becky, next week will be a great week, hopefully.
Have fun on Ebay Mike
Rosemary, This bad one is going to stretch into at least three weeks. I have court dates which I was not expecting. Got sued over something that is not my fault. Someone just being a jerk. Hopefully, this crooked judicial system will not charge me with it.
This area seems to have the crookedest judicial system of any I have seen around the country. They get away with it too. I am usually a supporter of the judicial system but this one, I cannot. I can't wait to get away from this area. Dennis and I are trying to figure out how to move to another area but the money situation is not good.
Just heard from Brenda. They are doing well and she will try to pop in this evening to bring you all up to date. Prayers are appreciated.
Hi all. Sunny and overcast today. At least, it isn't raining like it was yesterday. My shoes are still soaked. Going to have to wear others till they dry.
Morning all. Can I have a coffee and pastry please Mike.
I was trying to think of some news to write here, but there is none , just another quiet day which doesn't displease me. Lol
Hope your shoes dry out becky, stuff them with newspaper or kitchen roll.
If the shoes weren't so cold, I would just keep wearing them. They were just a tad tight, now they will tighten up some more. That is what you get when you have real leather shoes. They are very durable though. I will have to wear them a bit more to loosen them up. Or get some neatsfoot oil and grease them up good. That will also soften them up again. I have them sitting next to my desk. If you dry them too fast, they will shrink more. I put them on for a while until my feet get too cold and then take them off. They are drying out though. When I got home from the grocery store yesterday, they squished every step.
Thank you Mike, that poem really wrote itself.
Becky you make me laugh, what a wonderful title for a poem that would be 'Squishy Shoes' Lol
Hi Ya'll,
Well, Rosemay, that poem of yours wrote me into a state of the weepies, so I will have to join you for a cheese danish and some tea. Quite beautiful, girlfriend...
Glad to hear about Hyph and thinking of snakeslane and Peggy as well. Hope everyone has a lovely weekend, mar.
Mike, I have two sets of the shoe stretchers. I wish I could get to them. I would let them go for a decent price. Rosemay's latest was a real tearjerker. I liked the box of Kleenex at the bottom.
Hi mar, How have you been?
Rosemay, you may use it, I don't write poetry. I will look forward to seeing it because with a title like that, it will probably be funny.
Thanks, Mike, I will enjoy listening to the jukebox and catching up with everyone. Rose make the best danish, so creamy and fresh!
Becky, I am back teaching now that the holidays are behind us, so my time feels a little tighter. Hope your studies are going well and I owe you a visit soon.
Hello all, I am in Calgary. Very sad news and the worst possible scenerio, my dear brother passed away Jan. 23 in hospital from complications following emergency surgery, and I did not make it in time to see him. I know you have already heard mckbirdbks, and I thank you so much for your kind condolences. I am here with a brother and we are in the middle of the awful task of clearing up our brother's affairs and clearing out his apartment. We'll probably be in Calgary at least another week.
Thank you mckbirdbks, we are struggeling through each day in unfamiliar territory, but people have been very kind and helpful.
snakeslane, I am so sorry to hear of your brother. I am so sorry that you did not get there in time to see him. I know how that feels, I didn't make it to see either my mom or dad. I will be praying that you get through this with a minimum of heartbreak and problems. It is very difficult. You know where to find me if you need me. I am only an email away and check those things constantly.
I am so very sorry Snakeslane for your loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers. We love you and will be thinking about you everyday. Like Becky said, we are only an email away. Sending many hugs your way.
Oh Dear snakeslane,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your brother as you face this unexpected sadness together. The words that I can think of at this time are: that you are loved by many; you are stronger than you will ever realize; and your brother knew how much you cared. I do not believe we ever truly say goodbye to those we love. Please be gentle with yourself through these days and know that we are here for you. Hugs, Maria
Hi all, I finally brought my laptop with me so I could try and catch up. Still reading through. Snakeslane, I offer my deep felt condolences on your loss. I'm so sorry about your brother and will be praying for you in this difficult time.
Have missed my friends here for the past few days following hubby's long awaited surgery. It has been a difficult few days, but I count my blessings that things are improving. Really, really did miss each of you so much.
Maria, my dear friend, thanks for the note and I'll catch up with you soon. The internet has been down since we lost power last Sat and my IT guru is in rehab for the time being. That's where I am now. Thankfully they have wifi here.
Mike, a large coffee would be really fine about now. Are there any bagels?
Peg
Just came over from Snakeslane's Hey Jude hub enjoying some nice music along with some of her fond (but sad) memories. Wow, I can certainly count my blessings after being in this hospital environment for so many days and watching as the dramas unfold for different families. It sure puts things into perspective.
The coffee is great, as usual Mck, and thanks for the kind support. We can always look around and see how fortunate we truly are.
Peg, I am glad to hear that your hubby had his surgery and is improving. Will continue to keep y'all in our prayers. Hope to see you back in full force soon.
Good afternoon all. Could I get a grilled chicken sandwich with cheese and bacon on toasted whole wheat please. I have a craving for one.
Morning all.
Snakeslane I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your brother. Know that you and your family are in my thoughts through this hard time. Sending you hugs.
Peg I am pleased to hear that your hubby is recovering and hope he'll soon be home with you. I have missed seeing you here.
Just a coffee for me this morning please Mike
May I sit with all you ladies, come and join us Mike. Time to just sit and count our blessings I think.
Thank you for the sandwich. I have been craving one of those for days but I am the only one in the family to have adventuresome taste buds. No one else will eat them so I don't make them. I made BLT's and they thought that was too adventurous for them.
I thought I'd share my latest fanmail. Haha
'Hello Dear, How are you doing today..I hope you are doing Great... Looking for partiner : Looking for a good man to live with the rest of my life with. No-Games on my part. Interests: Sport, Nature E-mail : xxxxx@yahoo.com i hope to here from you soon take care...'
Must think this is a free dating site. Only been a member for 2 hours, I wonder how many she sent out. I have reported it as spam
Comical Rosemay, Especially since she sent it to someone with your name.
Mike, HELP. How do you link two hubs together? I am writing one that has grown to 2500 words and I am still not done.
Write it as 2 parts Becky and in each you type the title of the ohter in a text module, then click on the link icon and HP will search and will give a list of related hubs, listing yours first which will most likely include your other hub to choose. just click on it and all is done.
I'm never very good at explaining things so good luck
Hi guys, thank you all so much wow, really appreciate the warm thoughts here in cold cold Calgary. I broke down and got a room for myself a few blocks away from the apartment. (I can see it from my window) I could not take one more night. Now I will go there just to work on things and have a place to call 'home' that is not so distressing. Got WiFi with the room. I miss my cats lol. Hope hubby is on the mend Peg. Hospitals are no fun, that's for sure. Can't help you Becky, with the hub consolidating, let me know when you find out.Sounds like an epic work. Also Becky, on a personal note, that must have been very hard, what you went through with your parents far away and not able to say goodbye. I guess what they say is true, it's so important to appreciate the ones we love while we still can.
Thanks for the help y'all. I think I will get it. I cut the first to about 1600 words and pasted the rest into another one. I will link it when I am finished with it. It may even go to three. I hope not. It is depressing, but therapeutic and maybe it will help someone.
snakelane, It was hard but they both knew that I loved them and missed them terribly. My mom was in a coma for the last six months anyway. If I didn't get out there, she wouldn't know and I always had my sister give her a hug and a kiss from me. My dad, I talked to on the phone the night before he died. It was my birthday and he begged to call me so they did.
Thanks Mike, you are always our savior. I can do a bunch, just from looking good at it but I missed that one. I looked at it and it looks pretty straight once I know where to look.
I am taking a break. Getting too depressed to work on it. Already had a comment on the first one and it is a good thing I didn't go into greater depth. The next part is more personal.
"Honey, I'm home!" It seems I have missed lots and lots. Snakeslane, my thoughts are with you. Becky, I will go by to read your Hub. Rosemay, I got that same email and reported her as Spam. If I need a date I shall get my own. Everyone else, I cannot possibly catch up and have just cleared my Inbox. I apologize for that but just looking at it made me feel overwhelmed.
"What's that Earl?" Yes I will have your great coffee and anything Rose has fresh baked. It is nice to be here today.
Welcome back, Hyph and Good Morning, Ya'll,
Becky, You are writing from the heart, very powerful words and great comments.
The apple/ raisin strudel sounds too delicious to pass up! I think I will join everyone for a morning/ evening chat as well. The Cafe smells heavenly, since Rose starting baking on the premises.
Hi Mike, Hi Hyphenbird I have missed you, Snakeslane I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your brother and send you hugs x
I hope you are enjoying your Sunday Mike, can I have a coffee please and one of Rose's delicious pastries, it's cold and dull here, we have a nice roaring fire going, time to put pen to paper I think I can feel a hub coming on...
Best wishes Lesley
Hello everyone, Hyphen so good to see you back. So much is going on. I hope everything smoothes out for all. I think i will sit and chat with Lesley and have one of Rose's apple/raisin strudels. The aroma is wonderful, and of course i will have coffee too..Cheers friends.
Good Morning everyone,
So happy to see you back Brenda..Hello Mar, Ruby, Mike, and Lesley,
Hope everyone is doing well...Another cold one here in Texas..Think I will sit and have some coffee with my friends..We need to catch up..I know I have fell behind..
Good morning all. Ah yes, coffee sounds good...what we all do without your cafe mckbirdbks. A real fire place is the only way to go.
Hi mckbbks, thank you. Wondering what kind of wood you burn? Do you have to buy it there?
Oh wow, that is interesting mckbs, so the man in the tree illustration you did for my gardening Hub could well be you!
Glad to hear the ladder placement is not your style. My tree pruning experience is with the shorter variety of orchard and ornamental trees. Anything taller I try to catch before they get that tall. If not I call in an arborist, or a 'logger' as we call them on the coast.
You're hired!
Good afternoon all, I am so glad to see that all my missing friends from the cafe are here today. It has been so lonely without you. I hope I did not scare you all off with my whiney tale.
Hyphen, Glad you are doing good. It is hard picking up after one of those storms. I went out a couple of years ago and cleaned for two weeks down one of the creeks here. It had been ignored until all the people were taken care of and it was a mess. We picked up all the dead trees and branches and piled them into piles. Then everyone was invited to go get firewood from it. We spread seed around and then we had to spread straw around to work as a greenhouse, encouraging plant growth. Erosion would set in otherwise. The Volunteer fire dept. got a contract with the Div. of Forestry to do the work. We all volunteered to help them so they could keep as much of that as they could. They used the money to buy equipment.
snakeslane, we had a 40 ft. tulip poplar fall on our garage when the storms came through after Katrina. Insurance paid to have it gotten off of the garage so we could rebuild the garage. It was almost $700 to get it removed. I would hate to have to pay for that. The next tree that had to come down, we called a friend and he came over and did it for us. He cut firewood so much, he was good at it.
Hey Mike, Guess what happened just a little bit ago? I got an email from my cousin, who found me through the Old Family Pictures hub. The granddaughter of My great-uncle Orrin. The one I do not have a picture of. I guess that would be third cousin.
Hello Mck and friends,
Just sitting beside the Polar 500 machine that makes a soothing barage of white noise. RacerX is slowly but surely improving and I'm becoming quite a pest around the Rehab place. I can clear a room just by walking in. Sunday is slow here and I missed my friends and of course the delicious java at the cafe. Did I hear someone mention apple raisin struddle? Mmmm. Just what I need for a snack.
Rosemay, Becky, Mar, Hyphen, Sunnie, Snakeslane, Always and Movie (hope I didn't forget anyone) thanks so much for your kind thoughts as Jim recovers. It's a lot harder than he thought it would be. The dogs miss him so much as do I. I'm so glad there is wifi here since the internet will be down at home until he returns there.
Snakeslane, I can't imagine the difficulty you are facing and wish I could help in some way. Mike, I hope you stay out of those trees. Danger, warning Will Robinson.
No rich uncle there. I know better on that one.
Peg, glad to hear he is better. Our dog would be in big trouble without my hubby here. I know you miss him as I would miss mine. It isn't the same as having them with us all the time. Any surgery is harder than we think. I have had a couple now and that is enough. If I don't have to have it, I won't. The carpal tunnel and ulner nerve damage is just going to have to be a way of life for me. I have had enough. Take care of him and yourself Peg, we will see you more when he is out.
Mck, thanks for the coffee and strudel. I'm about to head home so until tomorrow, hope you all take care. And thanks so much for being there for me now. Becky, thanks for the kind words. Till later. Peg
It is so nice to see everyone here. Nice to have you back Hyphen. Snakeslane it is good to hear from you, take care. Peg. Good to hear Jim is recovering and will hopefully be home soon. Surgery takes a lot longer to recover from as we get older.
A very good morning to everyone else.
Mike I hated my last neighbours trees, in Autumn the wind always seem to blow in the direction of my front lawn and door.
I'll have a coffee please and you know what I really have a tatse for today, a nice juicy steak and salad. Had a couple of light fruit and veg days so ready for that steak. Lol
Hi all, I am not doing well at acknowleging comments today, sorry about that. But I do appreciate that Em's cafe regulars are so thoughtful. Thank you all. I think I'm doing the best I can under the circumstances. I watched three movies in a row last night at the hotel. Alphie with Jude Law, Cassanova with Heath Ledger and an amazing supporting cast, and Jane Eyre with not sure who and slept through most of that. Did a little more work on clearing out brother's place today, but we gave ourselves a short day because it's Sunday and we are exhausted, so I'm back at the ranch. Sure glad brought lap top along. Have fallen hopelessly behind in anything Hub Pages related.
Thinking of you Snakeslane...:)
Haha no I never complained to the neighbour Lol, Not his fault it was just frustrating. I had no tall trees but was forever clearing up the leaves.
. I did chicken enchilada a couple of weeks ago, but had no sour cream so I added coconut cream instead, it turned out OK. Chicken is so versatile. We don't go out too often but I usually try to have something I wouldn't normally do at home. makes a nice change.
Mike, you are a dreadful neighbor. You need to get over to the neighbors yard and rake all of your leaves out of it. lol! Some people just don't have a clue. I had 45 trees in my 1 1/2 acre yard. THAT is a bunch of leaves. We would rake a pile and burn, rake a pile and burn. Twice a week and it was still knee deep. LOL!!
Shoot Mike, last week I watched the police watching a drug deal going on. They didn't do a thing.
So does anyone know what it means when you have two red arrows up on a hub? I went to see how many visitors I had on my hubs tonight and found two red arrows on one of them. Just curious.
Becky, I think it means that Hub has has a lot of views.
We have new renter neibours, first weekend in they had a party, I thought you know OK a housewarming party, but it went on till after 3am and out into the street, beer cans everywhere next morning including in our garden. I got straight onto their landlord along with some other neighbours and he gave them a written warning and its been quiet ever since
All our other neighbours are really good and we help each other out when needed
Hello everyone, Hyphen it is so good to see you back. I an a happy camper, i stopped my allergy injections, feeling so much better. I still do not know if i can be around a cat, i am afraid to try, maybe in a week or two i will go see my Sister Mary who has an adorable cat. I miss the cat as much as i miss her. It is supposed to be in the 60's here today..Woopie!! I will have a busy day today. It is time for some spring cleaning, but before i start, I will have another Apple/raisin strudle and black coffee please. They are so good..Be sure and tell Rose. Take care and have a good day everyone....Cheers
Morning guys. I had to laugh at your description of your neighbor mckbirdbks. "He was old when I got here (25 years ago), he has not changed a bit and he is old now." Sounds like a character right out of a Gabriel Marquez novel '100 years of Solitude'...
Hey Rosemay, good for you nipping the neighbor party action in the bud, way to go.
Good Morning Everyone,
Off to walk soon..very cold but going to bundle up...would love some coffee! :)
Having a noisy party next door can be annoying to say the least...we live on an acre in a subdivision but it has happened too...Hope everyone has a great day!
Will do, thanks for the tip.
Thanks, I have seen one red arrow but never two. That was the one my cousin found yesterday. She had never seen pictures of some of those people. She was probably showing everyone.
Morning all, Hope everyone is having a good day.
Coffee and scrambled eggs for me please.
Makes me feel lucky to be living where I am, police everywhere, drug busts, twilight zones.
We have burn laws here too Mike, and from October all indoor open fires are banned people are going to have to install wood burners or an alternative. Ours is an open fire but I prefer the wood burners less messy
Nice to connect with your cousin through HP Becky. A lovely surprise for both of you
Rosemay, what is really nice is that I have never met her. Her father was not as close to our side of the family. He did not bring his family over to see us. He never brought them over to see my grandmother and she died when they were really young. I was about 15 when he married her mother. We weren't even invited to the wedding. She didn't even know that one of the great-uncles was still alive. She asked where he lived. So much for her to register in her mind. Relatives living right there that she did not know and all because her grandfather didn't visit them much.
Open fires I meant the regular fireplace yes. These are our woodburners which I assumed would be the same as yours

Lost one of my tomatoe plants, tomatoes were just growing when J decided to give them a 'real good watering' I think he drowned them, this one never recovered, the stem died off.
That is so nice for you Becky... interesting too
Shame the one that died had 3 tomatoes growing but not big enough to ripen off the plant yet
I just found a plant with mildew so have just treated that with baking soda. fingers crossed.
Hi Mck,
I am getting so ready for spring...We are set for some warm days but still too soon to plant..You are so lucky to be able to get some starters going..I may could do that too..
That sounds like a good plan! We do have to put a fence around the garden this year with the chickens and may not be as big as the past. So lots to do. We usually will have another frost or two I am sure..so hard to predict this weather here. Turning the ground is something I could do now so that is a good idea..
Sounds like a good plan Mike, and looking good. Y'all so energetic. I planted some herb seeds so that I can have herbs in pots this year. I love fresh Basil.
I used to plant marigolds with my veggies and herbs but I live in an apartment now. Help, get me out of here. And my husband signed a new lease today.
Becky a container garden will produce enough for a family. Do you have a patio or balcony?
Hello Earl. May I have a huge stack of pancakes and a gallon of coffee? Thanks.
I agree with Hyph container gardens are wonderful too. That sounds good Mike..we do have bricks around the garden but are going to do some rearranging with them this year as we plan to do verticle..it will be an adventure..lol Becky herbs are so wonderful.another thought is sprouting...I do that too...
I hope you all have a great day..Off to look at some antique stores with my parents and lunch..70's today..WHOO HOO!!!
hugs!
No, Hyph, all we have is a dark breezeway with just enough room for a couple of chairs. Never sees the light of day. I know about container gardens. I keep herbs on a bakers rack in front of a window and that is about all that we can have.
Sunnie, have fun. I wish I was there. It is going to be chilly here today. I had some neighbors that went vertical, they used clothesline poles and strung horizontal wires and then vertical ones down from it. You could pick from both sides. It looked really strange when it snowed though. The snow would cling to all the vines and it looked like a skinny wall of snow.
Good Morning Ya'll,
It is lovely to join the energy of Hyph, Sunnie and Beckie this pretty day in PA. Aunt Baby is happy that her walk today will see temps in the 50s... very flukish but also most appreciated by her Mommy! I guess I'd better load up on a stack of those flapjacks first with a mug of coffee, please?
Peggy and snakeslane, so glad to have you back 'home' at the Cafe.
They do not allow that here. Unless you own the land. If I owned the land, I would sell it and get the heck out of here.
Just popping my head in to say Hi to everyonw.
Just resting a moment in between window cleaning and vacuuming.
A nice cup of coffe would go down well please, and something sweet, an energy booster
I will probably be late to see your new one, I have to go pay bills. But I will be here sometime tomorrow.
I know, I am always here. lol
Becky Texas is nice! hint hint
If you are publishing your new one tomorrow all the more reason for me to get my jobs done today hahap
I have thought of Texas. I have also thought of Arizona. I am tending more towards Texas because it is generally cooler and I believe that the politics are more to my liking. I have to look at all those things. I have to think of how far can we get too. Texas is not real far. Not compared to Arizona anyway.
Becky there is a big VA in Temple Texas about 45 minutes from us. My dad goes there and really likes the care they give him. It is part of central Texas. There is two or three colleges too. The cost of living is lower than most. It is considered central Texas.
I will check it out Sunnie. I appreciate the suggestions. I go online so the colleges don't worry me.
This was simply perfect to start my morning. You have such a special touch, Mck. I feel like one of the patrons. They gave me a warm welcome after my long absence and I enjoyed every moment of my visit.

Oh wow, bakery in the cafe, Lyndon B and Ladybird. Lost love and Haiku, you've got it all mckbirdbks. What fun. Nothing less than I've come to expect from the Emerald Wells Cafe maestro! Regards, snakeslane
