Emerald Wells Café and Bakery 29 –February 1956 - Valentines Speakeasy Night
73
The sign on the store front read, ‘Emerald Wells Cafe’. Each morning at 6 a.m. Emmy turned the key in the front door, hit the lights, turned the little sign with the clock hands facing outward announcing ‘Open’ and made her way to the coffee machine to get the first pot brewing.
It’s been quiet at the café. This morning Rose opened, Earl is in the kitchen, grill ready. Dale has had his breakfast and is in his patrol car out at Tom’s Trading Post talking to Tom. He watches with some curiosity as a fellow pushes an old Chevy truck off Highway 29 towards Emerald Wells.
The man in his thirties is behind the truck and a younger woman is steering. Dale is mildly amused and keeping a sharp eye out on them. He even makes a note of the license plate. He then goes back to talking to Tom a moment, then shakes his head and tells Tom goodbye.
He gets in his car and pulls up behind the pickup.
The man stops and turns to see the sheriff’s car and he shakes his head.
Dale steps from his car and calls, ‘You want a push into town?”
“Sure”, the man calls, “This is the road to Emerald Wells, right?”
“It is”, Dale tells him. “You have business in town? Here guide me to the bumper”, he steps back in the car and does not close the door. He inches the car forward until the bumpers touch. “Get in” Dale calls.
The man is confused for a moment then steps toward the driver’s side of the truck. The woman slides over out of his way.
Dale pushes the car the couple of miles to town; they coast to a stop behind the hardware store.
The three get out of their cars, Dale puts his hand out, “I’m Dale, the sheriff.” stating the obvious.
“I’m Boots. Boots Copler and this here’s my sister Lee. Thanks for the push. That would a been a long couple of miles.”
“Lee Ann”, she walks forward and offers her hand.
“Folks you can get something to eat at the Café”, Dale said pointing across the street. He climbed back in his car to drive back out to the Trading Post.
Boots and Lee Ann walked across the street. On the door of the café a sign was taped that announced Speakeasy Night 8 p.m. Boots pushed the door open ringing the bell above the jam.
Rose greeted them as they entered, “Hey folks, grab a booth or the counter if you prefer.”
Earl was behind the counter talking to a fellow about a story about a Confederate prison for captured Union soldiers. “Interesting Mackinlay, you think people are going to buy it.”
Mr. Kantor replied, “I hope so, I worked a long time researching the events. I am going to be in town a couple more days. Maybe we could take up the discussion again.”
Earl walked to the back. He was sure he recognized ‘eggs and toast’ and started the two guest's breakfast.
“Can you tell me where the garage is?” Boots asked Rose.
“Carl’s Automotive is around the corner, but he has been closed for a few weeks now.’ Rose told him.
“Hope everyone is well”, Lee Ann added.
“What will you have? Coffee?” Rose asked.
“Two orders of eggs and toast – scrambled.” Boots called.
In a few minutes the two had their breakfast and coffee.
“I am a mechanic, any way I could get access to some tools?” Boot asked Rose.
Earl was sitting on his stool in the kitchen reading the paper. Rose came through checking the oven. Puff pastry apple and raisin strudel was one of the desserts to be served at this evenings poetry reading.
“I think the folks at the booth need our help. They are asking to borrow some tools. What do you think?” Rose asked Earl.
Earl set his paper down. “Says here A.A. Milne passed.”
“Milne, where do I know that name?” Rose asked.
“He wrote some popular children’s stories. I happen to read one of his stories several times while on a ship going overseas” he said walking to the front.
Boots put the last forkful of egg in his month and had time to swallow before Earl arrived at the table.
“Hear you need some tools. Know how to use them?” Earl asked a smile on his face.
Boots stood, “Boots, they call me Boots.” He put out his hand, that Earl took and the two men shook hands.
Earl liked him right off.
“Gonna have to tear that engine down to get her right again. But I don’t have any tools with us.” Boots told Earl.
“Fella named Carl owns the garage, but its’ been closed for weeks. He is due here tonight, if you can wait around. He’ll be here around eight. Wait or stop back, I’ll introduce you. Oh, there is a park about three quarter miles up the road with a lake.”
Earl turned and walked toward the kitchen.
“I am Lee Ann, by the way.” she called.
Earl turned, wiped his hand on his apron and came back and introduced himself properly; “nice to meet you; ah, Mrs. Boots?”
Her face lit up in such a beautiful smile, “Mrs. Boots, heavens no I am his sister.”
He returned her smile, released her hand and said, ‘nice to meet you” again.
Rose in the door way just shook her head. Then came around, ‘would you like more coffee?’ She topped off their coffee and went back in the kitchen. She had heart shaped cupcakes to decorate.
Lee Ann picked of the plates in front of them and carried them to the back, along with her coffee. “Where ya want these? Oh, cupcakes! Need any help decorating? I worked some bakery hours.”
‘Set them in there.” Earl pointed.
“Don’t be silly”, she walked to the sink and scrubbed the plates clean, setting them in a tray to dry.
Lee Ann dried her hands and walked over to stand by Rose.
Rose looked up from decorating and looked at the two dozen cupcakes left. She stood up straight and handed the decorating bag to Lee Ann, “let’s see what you can do.”
Boots walked out the front door across the street and popped the hood of his truck. He was going to have to pull the engine to get to the problem.
At six thirty A.A. and Richard showed up at the Café door. They carried a case of Coca Cola and three bottles of wine, “Carl, sent these ahead to cool’ he told Rose. “This place smells great. Room for a few more tonight?”
“Sure” Rose told him “How many?”
“Maryann and Bobbi want to join us” Richard told her. Then he added, ‘Oh, Harold and Em are back. They’ll be here.”
“Thanks”, Rose responded and walked back into the kitchen there were more desserts to make. “You ready to make some cupcakes?” she asked Lee Ann.
With the girls busy in the kitchen, Earl walked around in front and talked to A.A. and Richard.
At seven thirty Rose and Earl left to change for Speakeasy night. Lee Ann and Boots by that time had an invitation.
A.A. and Richard sat at the counter practicing their guitar.
Harold and Em pulled up behind the hardware store and walked across the street arm in arm to the Café. A feeling of being home came over her. It had been a busy month. She loved every moment of it. But it was so good to be home.
Both Richard and A.A. knew that they were back so the greeting was quiet.
Bobbi and MaryAnn pulled their pickup into the field next to the Café and walked in and sat with Richard and A.A.
Earl and Rose returned. Rose warmly greeted Em with a big hug and feeling sure of herself gave Harold a welcome home hug also. Boots walked in the front door.
“Any of you Carl?” he asked the room.
Earl spoke up, “He isn’t here yet, grab a seat. Join us. We have a small gathering about once a month and read some of our writing. And have some of the best desserts ever served in the State of Texas.”
“Who are we missing?” asked Rose.
“Well, Carl is not here.” Earl offered. “And Gabby and Dale.”
As he spoke Gabby made her way across the street wearing a dress she designed and hand stitched.
As she reached the door Dale pulled his squad car into the field behind the hardware store.
Em walked behind the counter and counted tea cups. Then thought the four youngsters would not be needing one.
“So what is all this?” asked Boots again.
“All us Hemingway’s come and read some poetry once a month.” Earl told him again.
“Can anyone read one?” Boots asked.
“Sure”, it was Rose.
Em went behind the counter and set the China dishes out for the desserts. And out of habit she wiped the cups. “How do we want to work this? Names in a bowl.” She took out a paper and wrote everyone’s name. ‘Girls, you reading tonight?”
MaryAnn, Bobbi and Lee Ann were just going to enjoy the rest of the group tonight.
Carl pulled to the curb at the front of the Café in a brand new Cadillac. He climbed out wearing new blue jeans, new shirt and clean hat and came through the door. “Hey everyone, Harold, Em, when did you get back?”
Carl looked around at the room. More people than he liked.
Em came over and gave Carl a nice hug, ‘You won’t go first", she whispered.
He squeezed her arm.
“Everybody ready” Em asked. “MaryAnn you are in charge of pulling names”
MaryAnn reaches in and pulls Harold’s name.
"I’m first?” asked Harold and went to the center.
Harold – Mexico Days
Your picture hangs from my mirror
Along with my rosary beads
Up and down the highways
Got’ta fill all of our needs
Your picture swings and sways
Reminds me what I’m working for
And diesels runn’n $0.19 cents
But no matter, it’s you I adore
We just engaged in a month of pure love
to be remembered as our Mexico days
Our hearts fit together like a hand and glove
I want to tell you I love you, in so many ways
Join me, we’ll cater to our wanderlust
as Texas highways we’ll freely roam
We’ll return to our ranch and horses
with you I will always be at home
Harold finishes. Earl, Carl and Dale applaud. Richard and A.A. and the girls join a moment late, being new to the routine.
"MaryAnn" Em says.
"Gabby" she reads.
Gabby’s - Not Fussy
Here we are at Valentines
where it’s all ‘Pretty Please’
But honey I’m the one
who’d rather sit an tease
Sounds of spring are in the air
Oh, love it can be so elusive
Baby, give me half a chance
and I’ll be ever so effusive
Truth be told an ya’ll know
I guess I’m just not fussy
The other day I heard a whisper
‘There goes that little hussy’
Truth be told an ya’ll may know
I like a man who is reclusive
To hide away in our lover’s nest
and make him mine exclusive
Gabby finishes. Carl, Earl and Dale go give hugs. The boys and girls watch. Boots sits back enjoying the reading.
"MaryAnn" calls Em and walks over to the bowl and drops Carls name in it.
"Rose" she calls.
Rose – Valentine Senryu
Valentine’s with you
need be the only holiday
to share on this earth
Hearts and rose petals
are so unnecessary
just time for a kiss
And pearls would be nice
maybe the Elvis album
just to hear with you
The oven is hot
strawberry tarts are rising
it is a day to indulge
Earl is first in line for a hug, Carl and Dale and Harold pat her on the back.
"Let's serve some desserts" Em offers.
Rose walks to the back and brings the trays of heart shaped cupcakes. "Lee Ann did most of the decorating." And then returns to the kitchen for the apple strudel.
Earl opened Coca Cola's and handed them to the youngsters. "What are you drinking Dale?"
"Coca Cola" he answered.
Boots came over and introduced himself to Carl. The two men began to talk over a cup of Earl's special tea.
The girls gather around Em. They want to hear the stories about the honeymoon.
Harold, Earl and Dale sit and listen to Harold tell a story about the trip down to Mexico.
Once the noise level rises and some cupcakes, studel and Coca Cola and wine, ah tea is done. Em ask, "Ready everyone? Maryann."
"Oh, I'm up", pulling a name, she does a quick clap, "A.A."
A.A. takes the guitar. "This is not really a poem" and begins,
A.A.’s song
Fate and wings
My baby says she loves me
she smiles when she sings
Though when I have a question, it’s
“we’ll leave it to fate and wings”
Her music has a melody
That plays to my heartstrings
She sings into the microphone
“we’ll leave it to fate and wings”
Our story does not seem common
we’ll see what it all brings
I sit here next to her and
think of one of cabbages and kings
“Your voice sends me shivers
I’m off to shop for rings”
My baby says she loves me, the rest
"we’ll leave to fate and wings.”
Gabby, Maryann, and Bobbi give hugs, the men applaud. Em and Rose are pushed to thought. Rose liked the pattern.
When the girls get seated again Maryann says, "I know" and reaches in the bowl. "Dale"
"This is short compared to ya'lls. I tried this idea I heard of." He clears his throat.
Dale - Rictameter
Let me
See to it that
Summer spirits prevail
This is important, take your time
Infatuation evaporates soon
When he is done come back to me
I ask when the time comes
Who will be there?
Let me
Dale is appluauded, and hugged my Em, Rose, Gabby. Lee Ann is just taking this all in. MaryAnn and Bobbi and the boys smile and lightly applaud.
"Anyone need anything?" Em asked. She tops off a few tea cups.
Earl takes another cupcake.
"MaryAnn" Em says.
"Richard" she calls out.
Richard takes the guitar. "This is something I have been working on for awhile. Still not done, but here goes"
Richard’s Song – Build a world
If words could build a world
what a world I’d build for you
With roads to bring you closer
and songs to see us through
The kindling it is burning
a mighty flame will form
I intend to keep you safe and dry
sheltered from lives storm
Just put your ear against my heart
and listen to my drum song
and be aware, that I’ll chance to
dare, say this is where you belong
If words could build a world
what a world I’d build for you
Nestled in amongst the pines
with a mountain view
All the girls gather around Richard. His face is flush with so much attention. The girls really crowded into his space. "Thank you" he managed to say. The men gave light applause. Even Harold, came over and gave his son a pat on the back.
"Carl" Maryann called.
Carl – Money to Burn
Another year has come around
an many things have changed
My house is now among the pines
my profession, I have exchanged
We’ve built our rigs and Texas
highways will be their travels
But it would be so nice to be
with a woman as her hair unravels
Now it’s time to fill the house
with a kitchen filled with laughter
and enjoy the work we all have done
and begin another chapter
As I grow older in our community
An contemplate that which I yearn
added to the troubled mix is what
to do with all this money I did not earn
Gabby is first in line. Rose and Em follow up. Lee Ann holds back and the girls hang back with A.A. and Richard.
When the room settles, "Earl" Maryann smiles
Earl –Be my girl
Be my girl in Summer
we’ll swim in Crystal falls
and reminisce about our youth
nature’s warmth we’ll use for walls
Be my girl in Fall
my thanks giving you will be
I’ll sit and listen to your songs
And bring you cups of tea
Be my girl in Winter
what a Christmas it will be
I’ll unwrap you neat and slowly
beneath the Christmas tree
Be my girl in the Spring
we’ll walk, our arms do entwine
And once again I’ll ask you
Please be my Valentine
All the girls line up for Earl. Even Lee Ann who spent the afternoon in the kitchen talking to Rose and Earl came over and offered a quick hug. The place was growing on her.
"Can anybody read?" Boots asks again.
Sure the room responds.
Boots opens his wallet, takes out a worn and heavily creased piece of paper. So worn there are holes where the the paper was creased twice.
Lee Ann sits straight in her chair, and brushes a tear from her eye. She is finding it hard to see her brother and that piece of paper again.
Boots reads,
Boots Copler -My Senses
I close my eyes and can taste your lips
their fresh nectar a warm ambrosia,
their texture soft and welcoming
their full rose color filling my hunger
My fingers trace your outline
a tour full of youth and vigor
a free hand sketch, lines
both delicate and proud
The scent of lavender intoxicates
dreams of drying clothes on
lavender bushes on summer days
near the bend in the river
The sunshine competed with
your presences, knowing it
would set at dusk, but you’d
remain to illuminate the night
Crickets grace the river reed
To guide us hand in hand
to a quiet spot where you gladly
played your nocturne symphony
Lee Ann comes over and gives her brother a big hug. Rose and Em give their congratulations. The men go give pats on the back. Gabby looks and stares at Boots.
"Anyone left" ask Em. "Oh, Me." she says and goes to the center of the room.
Em’s poem
On the second story in the Mexican village
We found ourselves in the heat of the day
We sweat as we lay in each other’s arms
As I started to rise, you said ‘no stay’
The music drifted from down on the street
You were so gentle, you were so sweet
As we were dressed for our lovers masquerade
That’s how our song became a Mariachi serenade
The ceiling fan hummed as it continued to sway
Every image is clear on what became my favorite day
I savoir the textures, the sounds, I recall every minute
Because here I stand with this body with a baby in it
Darl’n we’re ready, no cause for alarm
In the Mexican village and all of its charm
So Harold be happy, Harold be glad
Harold our baby will be so proud of his Dad
Rose rocks back on her chair and covers her mouth with both hands in happiness and surprise. Gabby gets the first hug. But the men crowd around her - Carl, then Earl, Dale, A.A., Gabby in bouncing up and down.
Richard sits 'floored' by the idea of a brother or sister.
Harold tilts his hat back on his head and stares across the room at Em. She rushes to him and gives him a hug meant to melt him on the spot.
Carl walks over to Boots and shakes his hand, "Everyone, Boots is going to be running the garage for me, they'll be staying in Emerald Wells for awhile."
Everyone was relaxed, everyone was having a good time. It was Speakeasy Night.

It's so much fun coming to the cafe...I'm always delighted and entertained just by walking through the doors.
Coffee on already? I'll take a large cup and go over the speakeasy night again. Flora's birthday is today so I'd like to pick up a decadent chocolate cake from Rose sometime today...will that be alright?
Love this Mike.
I read your poems, I'll come back again to read the story. The personification of the characters of Emerald cafe is wonderful.
Wonderful, Harold and Em are back with good news and they have a new mechanic. Beautiful story. And they know some other people their age already. Beautiful poems, great pictures.
This was the best Speakeasy ever in the history of ever. The poems are amazing and I love the song. I do believe I liked Gabby's poem best until Em spoke. I intend to scream like a girl now so hold your ears. screeeeeeeaaaaam
I love it and is MacKinley who I think he is?! Kantor sounds like Alastar. lol
Drinks and pastries on me all day today. We had a great time, Earl's special teas has me in a great mood and my boy made honor roll on his report card yesterday. I love this town, this Cafe and these friends.
I have to agree with hypenbird! Excellent...LOVED loved loved all the poems...going to reread more slowly...voted interesting, and UP! Congrats Harold and Em!!! :)
Dear Mike,
Wow, I think you worked out your kinks to this romantic writing stuff! This is a fantastic multi-layered Speakeasy episode that I will need to read many times to fully appreciate.
I love your nod to AAMilne, I have hugged my Pooh today and shed a tear in memory!
The brother and sister are seamless... lotsa possibilities I would imagine, very decent and sweet.
All poems and songs show tenderness in character but that Gabby, my ever-growing favorite. She continues to share some vulnerabilities.
Although I usually sway towards Elvis, this month I have the FEVER... wow, that rendition is the best ever!
Voted UP and across the board! Loved it all!
Hyph, big hugs and congrats to your son, mar.
Mike, you are always on the ball! This is such a nice place to be..thanks Hyphenbird for being so generous buying coffee and treats...don't blame you for being proud of your son's notable achievements. Education is everything and will follow him, tempt his curiosity, and challenge his thoughts. Well done:-)
Hi Mike, what a fabulous romantic speakeasy night, congratulations to Harold and Em, I loved all the poems - Richard's song was my favourite!
That's great Boots and Lee Ann are staying, I like them already.
Many thanks Hyphenbird for the coffee and pastries and congratulations to your son.
I've had a wonderful time thank you and great job Mike!
What a treat to find a new episode of the cafe characters, and even better, to find a couple of new folks to join in the mix. Loved each of the poems and will take time to reread again. Missed being among these down home folks and thanks, Mck, for providing such a great place to meet.
On a personal note, Jim is regaining more of himself every day with new accomplishments on getting toward home again. Fondly, Peg
Thanks Rose and Mike for the decadent cake. It was delicious.
Pastry and coffee is perfectly timed. Thank you Mike and thanks for the well wishes. I'll pass them along. Seems like I've also been on this end of the recovery phase a lot. Lots easier than being on the mend.
Happy B-day to you Flora!
Thanks for the well wishes everyone. I will tell my boy and he will be delighted to know my cafe friends are happy for him. He is in the 3rd grade AIG (intellectually and academically gifted) class so it is even more difficult to make honor roll. They study at about 5th grade level. Now I am off to listen to the music. I didn't have time earlier. You made great selections mckbirdbks.
Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes.
I am not really running late. I have been hanging around for awhile. I have never seen that show of Elvis before, he was so raw, unbelievable. I loved this episode of another fun night at my favorite little cafe. The story line was great. I liked the diesel price, HaHa. I loved all the poetry, my favorite, Richard's song, ' Build a World ' Next would be Dale's Rictameter. I think the Boots kids will be a happy additions to the growing family. I am so happy for Em, a baby! Woopie! You get better and better Mck..Loved it..Thank you..
Loving the new characters already, Boots (love his name) as the mechanic and Lee helping out in the café, they have settled right in.
What awesome news for Em and Harold to impart for Valentines month. Em will have to start taking it easy later on so Lee will be a great help.
All of the poems were wonderful. Can’t help but feel for Gabby. Richard’s song ‘Build a World’ was my favourite until I read Boots poem, and wondering what the story is hidden there. You did well with the Rictameter, 3 weeks ago on mine you said you knew nothing about them but here you are and have written a lovely one for Dale. Loved this line on AA’s poem “we’ll leave to fate and wings.”
Just love that ‘Fever’ gets you wanting to move huh.
Nice that you gave A. A. Milne a mention, his stories and poems are loved and enjoyed worldwide.
Thanks to Hyphen for the coffee and pastry. Congrats to your son. Happy Birthday to Flora once again.
Peg pleased to hear Jim is recovering nicely.
Comfort food from a hometown cafe and people you know...who could want more?
Oh man! This story is so romantic. Well done mckbirdbks!
Well you are extremely good at this 'romance stuff'
Listening to Fever again... get me moving for the day. Lol
Coffee and toast please
Thank you for the shout, fingerrs crossed it stays there. I thought I had posted it somewhere when I first wrote it but couldn't find it so maybe I didn't.
I love to listen to John Denver. I know just what you mean about Fever having the same inpact as it did all those years ago. Some songs just never lose that or diminish over time.
Hi all, What's up? I have lost my text curser and can't see where I am typing. Anyone have a clue how I did that or how to fix it?
It happens to me now and then Becky, no idea why or how to fix it, it usually comes back next time
It is back but thanks for all of your suggestions.
Good Evening, Ya'll,
Just dropping by on a little break and wanted to say HI.
Wow, that Gabby is something else... having her own agent? Who knew?
I just read Rosemay's latest and loved it, as the sweet song with the perfect harmony of JD & ONJ.
Mike, your last comment to Becky was so 'over my head' that I will need to fill it quickly with a delicious cheese danish and my evening tea. Then perhaps my 'default' will kick in? Now that I can 'cut and paste', I am feeling fearless!
OK, hoping everyone has a peaceful night, mar.
I came back to read and it was there that time. I didn't do anything except keep reading. Back arrow and clicking on things. I am usually pretty computer literate and I don't know what happened.
If you get bored, go to Google, the web site , not the search and search the word askew. Then laugh at the search page.
I always wanted to read a few of your older ones in this series before following, but I have never got round to it so rather than miss any more I will start from this point on.
This one is great and has to have my up up and away !!!!
Take care;
Eddy.
One of the best Emerald Wells Cafe yet. Very interested to see where Mr Kantors going with his research and Puff Pastry Apple or the other dessert will bring me in to the Speakeasy every time. Superlative poems, what a joy to behold such creations!
Good Morning, Ya'll,
I love problems that solve themselves! So glad Becky is back in business having fun!
It is fabulous to see Eddy and Alastar! I'm going to have to spend some time catching up with some scrapple and eggs (oops, is that OK in TX, if not, bacon...) and coffee.
Happy Friday everyone, mar!
Ok Mar, you have stumped the non Texans about scrapple. I have had chocolate gravy but no scrapple. What is it? Never mind, I found the recipe. Something on the order of head cheese from the rest of the body. uck!! Here ya go Mike. Give this to Earl.
I keep waiting for someone to notice my new profile pic and I guess I am going to have to bring it to y'alls attention. It is not the same one that was on there. It is a little different and you need to check it out closer. You will laugh.
Instead of getting out the magnifying glass, hit the Ctrl key and scroll on the mouse. My son was making fun of me and told me that he was surprised I did not know that trick.
You have to hold the Ctrl key down while scrolling.
Hello Mike,
My oh my I am soooo late in the congratulations on such a wonderful, beautiful Speakeasy night. Em is glowing and what a wonderful way to end a perfect Valentines night! You have out done yourself with this one. Truly the best in every way. I really loved it so much. As for favorites, well Richard to me really rocked the sentiment of Valentines. Was so wonderful. Sorry it took me so long to get here. Wanted to sit and savor the moment. No interruptions. Thank you for making our Valentines very special with your work of art.
I loved it!
Sunnie
Morning all. Hope everyone is well.
I always learn something new popping into the cafe.
I've learned about Kantor who added an 'a' to his name because it sounded more Scottish, wrote 30 novels and what Andersonville was.
And thank you mar I now know what 'scrapple' is and that you can also add apple. I Googled it and also found out that Delaware has an annual 'Apple scrapple festival. Sounds like lots of fun.
Becky I tried that ctrl and scroll but it only increases the text and not the image for me.
Our noisy neighbours are partying again… all night long. It is 10am and the music is still blaring. We called ‘Noise Control’ at 3am who turned the music off but it was back on again as soon as they left. The landlord came to hear for himself at 7am and sent them a text to say he will be paying them a visit later today. He is going to give them notice thank goodness.
Good morning Sunnie
Coffee and waffles for me please, just a little blurry eyed so better bring a cloth too just in case Mike
Morning Rosemary,
Good to see you! I have been having to do a nursing class to keep up my license so has been a busy few days and working outside but things are to settle down now..I hope you got some sleep with those neighbors..so sorry..Have a wonderful day! Hugs,
!
Hi Sunnie I can understand you having to do a nurses class to keep your licence, things are changing all the time in the medical world.
I dozed here and there but I will go take a nap later when it has quietened down.
Enjoy your weekend.
Mike, did you notice my granddaughter Gracie, was choking me when that was taken? my daughter snapped just as I was gasping for air. I finally got a hand free to move her arm but Noah was trying to fall off my lap head first, going after the dog. And Emma was diving head first into my lap for some reason. True action shot. Hayden was the only one not doing anything for once.
If you don't pull it in quite so far, it should work better. I can get it all pixellated.
Did you all try askew?
Rosemay, I am so sorry you had to put up with all the noise. We call the police again and if they have to come back out, they arrest them for disturbing the peace.
I don't know why it doesn't bring the picture in, unless you have an older computer with a so-so graphics card. My son says mine, for as old as it is, has a very good graphics card. Gamer quality.
Sunnie, I have wondered where you were. I am glad to see you back.
Hello everyone, Just popped in to look at the cute pictures from Mockingbird books. I love them, esp. the little girl with the valentine in her hand. It is another beautiful day here, in the 60's..Spring is in the air and i am a happy camper..Take care...
Becky,
Your pic is adorable, such family fun!
Now, scrapple is rather disgusting to describe and looks just like that pic uncooked. I am not sure why they call it a cheese. You actually either love it or you hate it. It is a meat (a collection of sorts... kinda like the sausage department), on the menu, it's right there with bacon, ham, all that low-fat, low-calorie stuff I enjoy! It's fried in slices and I indulge sparingly. There you have it, one of mar's biggest weaknesses, right up there with mac and cheese and pecan pie!
Whoa, better slow down... I'm 'chunkin' out just thinking about it all! Off to listen to some funky music and see ya'll later, mar.
Just do the Google search box, it works too although my daughter said it wouldn't. I figured it would. Just a hint, look at the alignment.
Love you picture Becky..arms so full of love and just what I pictured...
I love that picture. Holding on to my four little loves is so hard and so easy at the same time. They get a little rambunctious at times. I miss them. With my van broken and so much to do on our one day a month when we rent a car, I have not been able to see them. Rodger's in-laws only have a little pick-up and so can't bring them over. Only one at a time and they would fight over which one. A cab out there would be about $20 each way and we just can't do that.
Hellooo, I am home! Cats are hiding from me. Me! Too funny...Long day for me. So happy to be home.
Welcome home snakeslane..so happy you made it back safe and sound..the cats are probibly pouting...lol Get some rest!
Hi Becky,
I know what you mean..Since I dont watch Xavier now I dont see him as much with him being in school. I miss him alot..I get him Sunday though..
Hey snakeslane, Happy to see you home. They are just pouting. My dog wouldn't talk to me for a week after I finally got back from my son being in the hospital. Plus she got revenge. Always been well house trained and suddenly, she wouldn't go outside. Hope yours are a little faster forgiving.
Sunnie, I bet you do miss him. At least you get him Sunday. I haven't seen my babies for almost 3 months and they only live 4 miles away. They are going to be very surprised when grandma finally walks out there. I am getting to that point. Pack a backpack and take a hike for a couple of days.
Thank you Nurse Sunnie :)
Thank you Becky (MaMa Becky).
Cats are outside for the first time in almost 2 weeks, the pouting did not last long. All friendly now. A lot of talking going on. :)
Hi Snakeslane..now they are just happy you are home and to be able to go outside..
Becky..If you start out walking make sure you pack some pepper spray, a big stick and walk way off the main road..No Wait..dont walk at all...we have to come up with a better way..lol
I sound like Mike...he is the problem solver..haha Must be still working on dinner...:)
Sunnie, If I walk way off the main road, I will be walking in the woods. LOL!!! I know how to walk in the country. 1 mile down the road past Wal-mart, I would have to turn left and then I would be in the country. My daughter in law walks it to and from work. She never has a problem. Speaking of dinner, my husband finally has decided he is ready to eat. We are having beef stew. Yummy.
That was "one of the best yet" Mike. It'd be hard for one Emerald Wells to surpass another. Recall the Andersonville connection now, thanks for the remind.:)
Enjoy dinner Beck! That is good it is a safe area!...
Sunnie, there is only one unsafe area in this town and it isn't unsafe. You just have to ignore the dope deals. If the cops spent more time worrying about the dopers and less messing with seniors, this would be a nice town.
Especially during the day. I guess some people have been messed with after dark but they never mess with me. I am big enough to take care of myself. I have for years. No one has ever messed with me, they take one look and decide I will whip their tushes, I guess. I used to walk around Reno at night and no one bothered me.
That is good to feel safe and know that the area is okay.I have my attack dog and chickens..surely that will detor something...Lol
Mike, that is eight miles to pick me up and bring me home. If he took me out there when he goes to work, and brought me home when he gets off, I could see them all day. He is an *** and won't do that.
As far as me moving in with them, they moved in with me several times. They owe me. Although we did kick the mother out.
We finally got fed up with her complaining about having to clean the living room and kitchen. Her family was making the mess. Dennis sits in his chair and goes to bed. I am at my desk in the back room. Katy was hiding in her room.
No, halfway is a convenience store on a country corner. The other way but not this way. The roads are NOT quiet enough. Highways all the way.
I wouldn't want to walk those three kids on along that road. Noah would have to be carried and he is HEAVY.
Did I hear someone call my name, sorry dozed off there Mike, a coffee to ake me up would be good. Lol. The music didn't stop until 11am. Not nice listening music either, that repetative Boom boom base stuff. 16 hours of it. The police won't come Becky they just tell you to call Noise Control.
Nice to see you back snakeslane and pleased the pussies came around quickly.
Lovely family photo Becky, shame you can't get to see them very often. Pity everyone can't theow in a few bucks for cab fair.
Poor Rosemay, hopefully they will be quiet tonight. Won't Noise Control do anything else? There has to be something you can do. I'd be napping while I could.
Greetings friends. I need pancakes and Earl's special tea. I just changed my profile picture to one with my new short hair that is going naturally gray. And I was admonishing my son to "take it already." If it is too awful I expect you all to be truthful and tell me to change it.
Thanks for the pancakes and "tea" Earl. Em, I am knitting a lovely baby blanket for you. It is soft as angel hair for your angel.
I love your new profile pic Hyphenbird. You look like such a warm, loving, kind, and beautiful woman. And I know you are!
Good morning mckbks. Thank you for encouraging words. Tackle is a good word for it, now where to start!
I ditto what Snakeslane said too...Not only do you have such a sweet, kind, and lovely face, your heart shines like no other :)
Thanks friends. I feel good about my decision. But I am not photogenic at all. Charis is a lovely girl's name. It is Greek for Grace. Vashon is a name that I wanted for a boy (after the island) but never got to use.
Hyphen, not only what they say BUT my hair is greyer than all of yours. Sunny, and you have more color in your hair than I do. I have more grandchildren than y'all too. If I can do it, you can. Within a month, I will have 10 grandchildren. Mercy me.
How about Pearl. The Pearl of their love and it would go nicely with Emerald. My granddaughter is Gracie.
Hey Hyphenbird, you are actually very photogenic. We are all shy about photographs of ourselves (I think). I am not photogenic, at least this is how I see it. If there is a camera out I run and hide.
Hyphen, You look beautiful. I need to cut my hair. The color, I am not ready to give up. My Sister Mary has snow white hair, It is beautiful. Mine will not be like that. I am only gray around the face. I have got to think about a shower gift for the baby. I always wanted a Girl and i was going to name her Cindy. I love the name Jagger for a boy. My neighbor has two boys Jagger and Caynon. Have a great day everyone...
My mom was teasing her mother-in-law, who was very traditional. She was pregnant with her third child and told my grandmother that she was considering either Caesar Vespasian or Casper Aloyicious for the baby's name. My grandmother almost had a panic attack.
Hi Mike, hi everybody, I hope you are all fit and well and enjoying the weekend, Hyphen you look fabulous!!!
We have snow here today, winter has arrived!
Can I have a coffee Mike and one of Rose's cupcakes please and I'll enjoy some wonderful company and warmth for a while.
How about Sadira (Sadie)...that is my oldest grandchilds name...have not heard it often.. It has the meaning of a lotus plant meaning...the jewel is in the lotus.
How about Amelia and/or Elvis?
Marilyn for a girl after the gorgeous actress or Elizabeth after Ms. Taylor. In a search I found this list of most popular names in 1956:
U.S. Population

Oh Boy, Twins!! It just keeps getting better..
Morning all Had a good 12 hours solid sleep so back into the swing Lol.
How about Ruby for a girl Mike that would go well with Emerald.
Also found this

My niece called her little girl Ruby Talula
Now twins would be nice :)
Coffee and eggs and bacon for me please. I'll sit by Ruby. (the grown one Lol
Yes wonderful sleep. The party and music continued until 11am. We did think about mowing the lawns and switching on the band saw as soon as it went quiet but then the other neighbours would be trying to get some sleep too.
Hi Ya'll,
So glad Rosemay got some sleep... it's awful when folks treat each other with such disrespect. As much as I love music, there's a time and a place...
Hyph, I will concur that you are a natural beauty. This picture is as lovely as all your others have been. Your smile always makes you glow!
I am a sucker for traditional names (no 'Blanket' or 'Apple' suggestions here!) I love the idea of Michael and/ or Mary for the little ones, as Hyph researched for us.
Tonight, I think I would like a special cup of tea. I'll just hang out at the counter and chill awhile if that's OK, mar.
Rosemay, That would have been fun. If your neighbors are like us, they would have helped you make noise. Revenge is so so sweet. LOL!!!
Hi Mar come sit by me, this hub is just full of beautiful people.
yes it was so tempting Becky. Lol
They are on a back section and so surrounded by 6 houses so it was unfair for all of us.
Thanks, Rosemay, I couldn't agree with you more. Let's just talk quietly, no need for the jukebox tonight, mar.
Oh well now you mention cake I'll have a slice, what is it? Lol
Hi mckbirdbks. I am charging up the dead battery in my car. Not sure how long to leave the charger on.
Oh, it's ok, car is running, only took a few minutes.
Thanks, I guess it wasn't dead. This is a fancy new charger (no needles). I will have to find the manual sometime and read it.
Wine cake sounds nice... whos birthday is it?
You sound like me snakeslane, I rarely bother to read the instructions. Lol
I did a big paper sorting and filing before I went away. Now I can't find anything!
haha Rosemay. Is it a 'girl' thing?
Must be a girl thing Lol
Happy Birthday to Kate then Mike, such a good age 25, Still young but mature if you know what I mean
ok I've got the charger in front of me. there is a switch. One side is labelled 'starting battery' other side is labelled 'deep cycle'. I had it on starting batery. And car started right away. I let it run and just now shut it off.
Tomorrow I search high and low for manual.
No, it is not a 'girl' thing. I read instructions, my husband does not. Cake sounds good. The special coffee sounds good. Thank you mck.
My husband wants me to watch a movie with him so I have to go for a while. He has been wanting me to watch it with him for a week now. He saw it last weekend and enjoyed it so much he wants to see it again. Have fun all.
Thanks for the tip. btw happy birthday to Kate. My niece is 30 today.
Thanks, I emailed her a couple of songs and a baby picture I had taken of her with her mom and dad. We are celebrating next weekend, both our birthdays, mine is coming up on the 17th (she lives out of town).
Enjoy your movie Becky
Seems to be a lot of birthdays this month, now wouldn't it be nice to have a birthday on the 29th,and stay young. Lol
Her dad is throwing a party. Seafood (Prawns and crab) and "telling whoppers" (stories). Her theme is purple (birthstone amethyst). I am not much of a partier, but they have invited me, so better show up I guess.
The movie we watched was "Hachi, a Dog's tale." It just got over and I am crying. It is a very good movie but it is also very sad.
Tell your daughter Happy Birthday for me too. Mine and my sons are this month also. Katy turned 15 last month. The 24th.
Youtube.
You are probably right mckbks, re family obligation. I am feeling a bit depleted in that department. However if I am going I better think up a couple of stories (funny) to tell.
Thanks for letting me steal a story mckbirdbks (that one was funny), but has to be a story about someone who is there (a true funny story about my niece for example). It's ok if I don't have one (is putting a rock in her nose funny?) My brother is a natural born comedian so no shortage of funny.
Good Morning, Ya'll,
snakeslane, I love a 'purple/ amethyst' party theme for February. BTW, 'nose stories' always cause a laugh riot at family parties... like when Mom had to take me to the ER for shoving a carrot up my nose (even at 3yo, I was silly...!)
Happy Birthday to your baby, Mike! That cake sounds so intriguing that I'm hoping Rose will make one for us gals to try this week.
For now, I am going to pour some coffee. Hope everyone enjoys a peaceful and happy Sunday, mar.
Good Morning,
Hope everyone is doing well..Cold one today here in Texas! Happy birthday to your daughter Mike..hope you have a nice family gathering. Mar...carrot up the nose so funny but not at the time I bet...:) Hope Snakeslane had fun at the party..Hugs to all.
Hi Mike, sounds as though you have possible baby names covered! I have dug out my baby knitting patterns and have already knitted a pair of bootees and about to start on a nice lacy matinee jacket....
Enjoy your Sunday!
Carrot up the nose. Lol I hope it wasn't a whole one haha, big nostrils. You make me laugh Mar
Better than my son though he used to put rabbit tods up his nose... ugh
I seem to meet you Sunnie as you get up and I am just on my way to bed. Lol
I used to knit for my kids Lesley.. now I just knit doggie jumpers.
Hope you had a good family get together for Katy Mike.
Have a good party Snakeslane
OK Night all
This was fascinating hub from you. I love your poem and the video as well. Thanks for share with us. Good work and rated up.
Prasetio
Good morning all. So nose stories are funny. Especially involving small children and small round objects (rocks, carrots). Who knew? Thank you for sharing that Mar. My party is not for another week. I have time to prepare (funny) and find something purple to wear. Are you wearing purple to your party mckbirdbks? (afterall it is February).
Oops, I forgot to mention rabbit 'tods', thanks for that one Rosemay.
Alrighty then mckbbks, no purple for you
Btw, battery is charging..
I loved the story and the love poems. What a clever way to present them. Wow! A lot of work, that's for sure. Great hub!! Voted up and awesome!! : )
There is a green light that should come on. It's automatic shut off when charged I think. Haven't located manual yet. I'm not very purple either, although I did have a pair of purple bell bottom pants in the days of mod/hippy clothing.
Yes, all good. My house-sitter left the glove box open accidentally when she was getting bags of salt out of the trunk. (trunk latch is in the glove box) so that one little light on drained the battery.
If your daughter wants to commiserate about the mentality of men, I could share a few stories lol.
Shoot, if kids sticking things into head orifices besides their mouths is funny, I have a hub or two worth of stories. They usually have the opposite effect on me. Katy stuck a screw from an erector set up her nose. Had to take her to the Dr. for that one and she had a hard time getting it out. Katy also stuck a bead up her nose but I pushed my finger on her nose just above the bead and pushed it out.
I stuck a piece of un-popped popcorn into my ear when I was three and punctured the eardrum. Had to have anesthitized surgery for that one and spent the night in the hospital.
My cousin stuck a piece of string up he nose and two weeks later, her mother found it while investigating the horrible breath. It got stuck hanging down the back of her throat. Had to go to the Dr.
Wow, it is a beautiful sunny day here, think I will go for a drive, later dudes.
Morning all.
Looka as though we may have some funny hubs on the way.
Now 'Uncle Mike' can I have poached eggs on toast please and a coffee.
I don't think that I will be writing about that subject, I can't find anything amusing to say about it. I'll think about it.
It's cold here today. I needed to walk over to the store but am trying to find excuses not to go. I am looking in the pantry and freezer for something for dinner and all I am finding is tuna. I also have boxes of mac n cheese but Dennis isn't supposed to eat the mac. I just remembered, I bought a bag of chicken breast. I don't have to walk to the store. Hooray.
My Katy just published a short story. I am jealous. She writes them so naturally and mine are so stiff. I am going to have to work on it.
If I had a vehicle, it wouldn't be so bad but I am not into walking when it is cold. I go into hibernation. LOL!! The cheaper store is all downhill but that makes it all uphill when I am carrying the groceries home. The more expensive store has just a few short uphills and no big deal. I prefer to walk to the more expensive store but I prefer the prices at the cheaper store. Terrible decisions. (groan)
I found enough that I won't need to go until tomorrow. Thankfully, it is supposed to be a little warmer.
Good morning mckbirdbks, coffee, please!
Wow 75% off! Thanks for coffee...
Good morning all, I am trying to type around a neglected feeling cat, so please pardon any typos, I can;t see the keyboard or the monitor half the time . She is my daughter's cat but she has decided now that she doesn't want it. I am trying to find another home for her but she has decided that I am her favorite person and I am halfway allergic to her. I will scratch her and love on her.
I like cats, they just make my sinus' act up so I do not want one.
Estate sales, some of my favorite things. I am missing them but maybe when the weather warms up, they will start having them again.
snakeslane, how was your drive yesterday? I am very jealous.
Hi Becky, I had to drive the car to charge the battery up. Jealous? Hmm. I will be right over to pick you up and take you shopping and we can put up some posters for the cat.
Afternoon mckbirdbks. Hi Becky. Been writing a 'novel' to family about trip to Calgary. Hoping I can put that behind me now.
Thanks mcbks. :)
Okay, hello everyone. Hi Mike. We are finally sprung from the slammer and I'm really Nurse Ratched now. Too bad I lost the old uniform. But really, things are slowly returning to whatever passes for normal around here. I'm busy reading up on nose carrots and 25th birthdays (Oh, I remember saying I was a quarter of a century old. If only. . .) I sure could use a nice piece of Wine Cake. Is that like rum cake only with wine?
Hi Nurse Ratched, good to see you. Happy to hear 'normal' prevails.
Hello snakeslane, I'm so glad to see you today. Yes, it is wonderful. How are things in your land?
Thank you Mck. And Snakeslane, please sit by me over here? Some coffee sounds really grand, thank you. So nice to have my IT guru home and that he fixed the internet connection. Yea! I'm going to close out for the night, but with luck, I'll be back tomorrow to catch up on all I've missed. Snakeslane, I love your new image. Peg
Hello everyone, I am having a birthday on the 26th of this month. I hope i get a wine cake, more wine than cake..Hee I hope everyone is well and happy. Snakeslane i love your new picture. Mike I know the feeling a quarter of a century goes so fast, unbelievable..Cheers
My birthday is the 25th, I wish I could say I was only half a century old Peg. My wedding anniversary is the 15th. I get to spend my anniversary at the VA. Oh, yippee(sarcasm font is really needed here)! I am not into wine cake so much as chocolate. The more, the better.
Hi Peg, nice to see you back. Bet you are glad to have your hubby home.
snakeslane, it is good that you got your car charged good. It is also good to get the feelings out and off your mind about your brother.
Good morning all, good to see the cafe hustle and bustle today, coffee please mckbirdbks, thank you very much.
Wine? Cake? I thought I heard my name being called. I will take a slice of anything and a cuppa coffee. Has anyone seen Dusty?
Morning Ms Bird. How's the weather there?
Wow, February is a big month for birthdays and anniversaries. Lots of Aquarians here.
Hello snakeslane. It is a beautiful day here. The sun is bright and has some warmth but we still want at least one snow this winter.
Ah, nice. Beautiful day here too (Sun), a little cold. but clear and big moon at night. I've not seen Dusty btw.
Hello everyone, I get a joke from Dusty about every week. He is fine. It is nice here today,In the 50's, sunny. I am cooking today, pork roast with all the fixin's and some buttered cabbage. I'll be back for dessert....
Thanks mckbbks.
Always, speaking of nice portraits, I love your new black and white photo. You were (maybe still?) a killer blonde wow!
Just re read comments, thanks Becky. And Peg, re: new portrait, I am slowly working my way to current pic. Still have a ways to go...Thank you for compliment. :)
snakeslane, I am Pisces. You're welcome.
I got a joke from Dusty yesterday but I haven't heard how he is doing. I send him jokes all the time.
We are taking the DAV van. In fact, I have to call them today to make arrangements. I really hate going that way because Dennis' appointment is in the afternoon and we will probably end up leaving at 6:00 am to get there by 8. We will be there all day too.
It is 51 degrees and sunny here today. Almost warm enough to go outside.
I don't like waiting either but I will be fine. I will just take my lightweight Kindle and read or play some games on it. My husband will be fuming and driving me nuts though. He does not like being at the VA anyway and usually leaves as soon as we can get out of there.
Morning all
Mike looking at the photos I was actually wondering if the wine in the cake was actually a mystery wine taken from the fountain of youth. Everyone seems to be getting younger. Maybe better keep an eye on whats happening, too much and we could all be talking gobbledegook and oredering pacifiers.
I will forgo the wine cake and have a slice of that fruit cake I see Rose has just put out and coffee please.
Becky that is an awful long time to hang around, how are you going to spend your time?
I have just been to visit Mary615 in Puerto Rico. it looks so nice and peaceful, not sure about the huricanes though
Hi Rosemay, my latest avatar is actually getting older.
Baby pics, now that's an idea.
Becky of course you are Pisces, my mistake. I am on the cusp of Pisces (pretty close anyway).
Kindle? Thought we were not allowed to mention here...I still haven't taken mine out of the box.
I'm sorry, Mike. I am the one that can't read though, without the lightweight, remember that. My hands cramp and it hurts! And I rarely went for the small romances. I like Anne McCaffrey and Diana Gabaldon. Their books are prodigiously thick. I have a couple that are three inches thick. Those I have in hardcover.
Sorry snakeslane, my mistake
Hey Rosemay no prob. :)
Hello Mck, Good afternoon all. Quiet here waiting to see if we need yet another Doctor visit this week. No news is good news as I emailed pics of affected parts to the doc. What a great world when we can get "seen" on line. Meanwhile, thanks Becky, it is nice to have my Guru home and doing so much better. No rooftop fix, Mck, it was just rebooting the OS. (??whatever) Snakeslane, I love your current portrait and look forward to the reveal of your other images. Rosemay, hey how are you?
If you aren't going to use it snakeslane, send it to me. Then maybe Katy will quit wanting to borrow mine all the time to get on her twitter feed.
Ok Becky, will keep that in mind. Darn Twitter...
Peg sure hope hubby feeling better soon, what a worry.
Mck, Peg, Re avatar, it is young (relatively speaking). :)
I have a camera attached to my computer but I never use it. I am thinking that I will have to take a current pic of me without all of my babies to use as camoflage
Cool Becky. Got to run do some errands, seeya'all later.
Don't be looking too hard, I am not in a hurry to change pics.
Peg, glad he is doing better.
Have fun, snakeslane.
I'm back. Cats are happy with a spoonful each of salmon dinner.
Hi everyone. Earl, may I have a cup of "tea"? A cold is taking me down and I am scheduled to speak at a local elementary school tomorrow and to read Calvin Compost in Organic City. I need all the energy I can get to face all those little ones.
Snakeslane, I would enjoy a nice bite of salmon myself.
Kind of laughing at you guys, it was just a can of salmon cat food. I wouldn't mind a salmon dinner right now...
Get better Ms Hyphen
I'm sorry, that wasn't very nice, how bout if I am laughing with you, not at you?
Hyphen, I have been researching the efficacy of onions. Cut the ends off of an onion, peel it and put it in a bowl next to you. It will turn black and that black is the germs in your body. It is an old wives tale and the Indians used it. A Dr. has recently researched it and it really works.
Tomorrow, I have a plan to get my gardening columns out of storage and get to work.
Hello all,
Hyph feel better soon..Those colds are the worst..Have fun with the kido's ..Snakeslane have fun getting your garden ready..How was Kates bday Mike? Thinking about you all..I know I am missing out on so much news..trying to catch up..ugggg!Becky have got a couple emails but not sure if Dusty has left for Florida yet..Do you know?
Hugs,
Sunnie
Thanks, Sunnie, I was just going to write about gardening. Does this mean I actually have to garden too?
I didn't know he was going to Florida until Mike said something about it today. I haven't heard anything, just a joke.
Mike, I am laughing, watching you try to keep up with the comments and conversation of all these women. If the onions are turning color, throw them away. Those are germs that they are absorbing.
As far as your baby goes, she has to grow up someday. I can see you being one of those 'Father of the Bride' type fathers. Never think any man is good enough for their baby. lol
LOL Mike this is you....hahaha
Just heard from Dusty..he is in Louisana and 400 miles more to go..Dogs are cuddled with him and he is fine!
Uh yes Snakeslane..have to plant some seeds too..hahaha
I will be waiting...hahahaha
That is good that you worry..that should never change..a girl always needs her daddy no matter how old...Dusty is tough...I am not sure how big that rig is..
I am not sure who takes care of his chickens and dogs..I bet he has some taking care of them..yes he will have his hands full for sure...You all have a good night..I am off the computer..Good night my dear friends..
I just got this from a friend of mine. I know you will all enjoy it so I had to share it.
I was eating breakfast and drinking my coffee with my 6-year-old and I asked her, "What is the 20th of February?"
She said "President's Day!"
She is a smart kid, so, I asked her, "What does President's Day mean?"
I was waiting for something about Washington or Lincoln etc.
She replied, "President's Day is when President Obama steps out of the White House, and if he sees his shadow, we have one more year of unemployment."
You know, it hurts when hot coffee spurts out your nose.
Good Morning, Ya'll,
I love to start my Wednesday at the Cafe with my friends after classes early in the week .
Today I have much catch-up planned, phone calls and overdue return e-mails (Hi, Sista Peg, welcome home, I have some nurse caps I can loan you!)
I'll hang out for a little while and see if anyone wants to join me for some coffee and whatever Earl has on the griddle this morning!
So the griddle is hot? Yeah. I will have a sky high stack of pancakes with that warm maple syrup and strong coffee. Hello friends.
Good morning Mck, Hey Maria! Hello Sunnie and Becky. Thanks for the well wishes. Every day gets better and better. Yes please, I'd love to have some coffee and Hyphen is right with the high stack of pancakes. Like your "do" Hyphen. Mar, the loan of your nurse's cap would be great.
Morning all, Becky I am sorry, only half got the President's Day joke. (Got the Groundhog Day part and the coffee spurting out the nose.) The child's line in the story goes right over my head as I am fairly uninformed about US politics.
Hope you have a good reading Ms Bird.
Oh, thanks for that 'stack'...Aunt Baby and I are none too pleased at all the 's' stuff --oh we'll just say snow, as it's already starting to stick! I know we should be grateful it's been such a 'balmy' winter to date... we could almost smell those mangoes from TX, Sunnie!
Peg, before I mail this nurse's cap, are there any other supplies you need... I have anything and everything, believe me! PS-- tell him prune juice is a better option!
Perhaps I'll hang out awhile and have some hot chocolate. I had a great AM chatting with a dear friend on the phone who always makes me feel on top of the world.
Hope everyone has a lovely day, despite our ranges in temps, mar.
Good morning mckbirdbks. Pancakes, nice. It was garbage day here early this morning. Two weeks of cat litter...gone!
The kids loved it and I loved them. I explained how a writer gets an idea and proceeds to create a work and how one cane earn money from writing. Then I showed them various ways like poetry, educational articles and fiction. The teacher said it went well. They were sweet.
Nice Hyphenbird! Bet the pancakes helped...
A gift, mckbirdbks?
Just had to get it out to the curb for garbage pick-up. (It was heavy). sigh...
A joke! Oh Kay. My mind is not processing humour (apparantly). Thanks for the joke. Actually ground is thawed, been quite mild here.
Not typing much so just popping in to say Hello to everyone and will catch up later
Hi Rosemay. Not typing?
Hello everyone. Had a few retorts written but erased them all. It's just good to be back and hanging out so I will zip it. (Moi?) Coffee is delicious and the company is great. Mar, thanks for the nurse cap and offer of supplies. I think I could start my own pharmacy at this point. Oh man. Rosemay, ouch, now that I learned what RSI is.
Hi all, Busy day here. Still have running to do but wanted to pop in and say hi. Sorry about your injury Rosemary. I know how you feel, having had tendonitis before and having carpel tunnel and ulnar nerve damage. Mine will take surgery to fix and I won't do surgery anymore, so it will have to stay that way. I have had my share of surgery in the last five years.
Oh Rosemay, so sorry. We will send messages and you just nod yes (or no). Really, not fun, hope improves with a rest.
RSI is all of the different problems lumped together, carpel tunnel, ulnar nerve damage, tendonitis, etc. It is used to denote all or one of them. Painful and annoying, especially when your hand cramps up in spasms. I got tendonitis from lifting my husbands wheelchair into the van when he broke his ankle. After that, we got a lift for it.
Okay, no problem. I actually saw it just a minute ago. I looked it up yesterday when I read her hub so it probably goes with it.
Before you all think I am a genius or something, I googled 'what is RSI' yesterday when I read her hub. It is amazing what you can find out that way.
Darn it, now I let you all know how I can be so smart. lol
So are you, you just didn't think of it. This inquiring mind wants to know.
Good morning mckbbks et al. Far too early. Not light yet, I think the 'Spring' mode is kicking in. Definitely coffee hour.
Good Mornong, Ya'll,
I think I will take a big mug of hot chocolate to go, if you please. I am heading out to take 'the (Aunt) Baby' in for her annual physical and some other errands.
I had to laugh, as yesterday I e-mailed Rosemay a 'Nurse's note', kinda 'telling her she was not allowed to overstress herself'. A wrist 'hurt' is no laughing matter and we will all be here when she feels better. If you are reading this, shhhh.... thanks, Rosemay.
Hope everyone has an easygoing day. Our 'wintery mix' ended up being quite beautiful this AM on the rooftops and trees with no accumulation. That's the best kind of snow to me.
Good morning Mar, (Nurse AB'sM), your snow scene sounds really nice.
Good Morning..off to walk in this nippy morning air..may be just a touch too cold..but going to try...I hope everyone has a great day! Rosemay I hope you feel better soon..Everyone stay warm!
I hope they did not drag you too far...lol My ears froze off...had a hat but still was cold 41 degrees..my walking partner bailed this morning..I sure didnt blame her..too bad you were not closer I could have helped with the walking of one dog at least then the dragging would not have been too bad..hahahaChrissy just looks up at me as if too say...Have fun..I am staying under this warm blanket..
Oh Sunnie, it is warm there today. It is 37 here and not getting any warmer. I wish I was there. OOps, Comcast is working on the lines outside. I might get cut off suddenly again. They shut it off for the whole building yesterday and I had to rewrite part of my school assignment. Really ticced me off. They could have at least warned us that we might get shut off. I was typing away and suddenly, the power goes off. Only lost 500 words though.
I won't be here tomorrow until late afternoon. I have court on trumped up charges. Wish me luck on it not costing me a fortune to get out of. Also, that I do not end up on probation since it is outrageous here and I can't afford it. Trumped up charges, I tell ya. I did not do it.
The cop was just mad that I would not sign the papers saying that my son abused me. He did not, I know what abuse is. We had an argument, brought on by his bi-polar. He was yelling and I was talking to him, telling him to calm down and quit throwing things. He is getting frustrated because he is on probation and they want him to pay so much money a week. He has lost two jobs because they will not work with the boss on times and can't find another job because the bosses around here know how probation works here. If you can't pay, they just throw you in jail. They were threatening that when he was working and paying them $100 a week. By the way, the judges own the probation company that is contracted to the county. How crooked is that?
Geez Becky what a nasty mess. I hope you are studying to be a lawyer, sounds like that is needed.
Geeze, I hope everyone is doing better..Life can get so full of problems..It sucks sometimes...I was in such a mood yesterday that i was going to delete all my emails, but i am feeling better today. Does anyone else get overwhelmed with so much email? There's no way i can read them all. I hate to not follow people when they follow me but i can't keep up. Mck you're 'gonna have to start charging us, we all come to you with out troubled thoughts. Let's all just sit in the corner booth, have a cup of coffee and wait for Hyphen to bring her jug..Hee
Shoot, that is normal here and people wonder why over half of the county has a record. They also wonder why people are leaving the area. Two or three counties right around here are like that. I WANT OUT OF HERE.
It is a zoo and would be a very good place to start a justice system. They need to be investigated but no one wants to do it. And half the people don't know that this is not the way the justice system is supposed to work. I have seen good ones and bad ones while living all over this country and this is the worst.
Hi Always. I am bad. I've only 'followed' about 8 or 10 people, plus I have the email notification thingy shut off. I don't get any emails, works for me.
Nah, we need some of Earl's special tea. Lots of it. Bring a pticher full, I will join you always. I do not follow everyone who follows me, I just follow those that I will read. I do not have time to follow everyone and I can't have my email cluttered up. I get some really important email and I need to be able to find it easy.
Ruby - You can set your account settings so you get only a Daily Digest of all comments/new hubs etc. in one email. Click on my Account up at the top. then click on the button Following. At the top you will see a prompt for a security question. answer it (or set them up if you haven't done so) and that will take you to an email notification setting page. You can set your email to get daily digest for each of a number of categories (each time a hub is published, each time a comment is made, each time a forum post is made etc.)
Wow Flora, you really know how!
Well i'll be darn..I didn't know that Flora. Will i ever learn all there is to know about this computer?? I will try doing that. Thank you.. I am just going to stop following everyone who follows me. I think i will be a much happier camper..Ok Earl, bring in the pitcher of
* Wink * tea....
I did it Flora..Thank you so much..It is going to be so much better. I didn't know about that option...
Hi mckbirdbks, yes I surf the home page and I follow comments I have made (under my account page). I also check out new people other people I am interested are following. (I also click on profile pages of people I know and see what they are up to and what they've published lately, and who they are following), works for me. No emails lol. I guess I am a stalker?
Thank you Flora, I just changed my settings to do a digest...that may work so much better..I was getting so many emails and messages...who new? lol
I asked a question now I cant respond to the comments...boy that is hard..is there a back door that I dont know about to respond...Oh well...adsense is on my bad list now...I have never clicked on any adds on my hubs..I just did not think to do that...I wonder if I have clicked somewhere I shouldnt have...I mean where the heck is there a no clicking signs...lol
Hi Sunnie, there's been quite a lot of discussion about Adsense accounts being disabled in the forums. That might be a good place to talk about what is happening. At least in Forum you can reply to people's comments. You could start a new Forum discussion about what is happening to you and you may get some help.
Thank you Snakeslane, I didnt think of that..I thought I was doing something wrong in not being able to comment back...Will give that a try...
Sunnie, you could also write a Hub about it.
Wow mckbirdbks, trimming the sails! Flora, you are brilliant. Should write a Hub about it.
They need to quit doing that. The creative writing is the inly reason I really came on here to begin with. If they make everybody quit, I will have to also.
Thank Earl for the tea, if he wants to make it hot and spiced, that is wonderful.
Good morning mckbks et al. Coffee? please thank you.
Good coffee...Cats decided to liven up the place early this morning. It's really their place. They just let me stay here. Argh...
Happy Friday, Ya'll,
snakeslane, funny I always say I live at Aunt Baby's residence. I think I am considered 'the help'; but she is so good to me, I cannot complain!
I'll have a coffee before my day begins and wish everyone a lovely day, mar.
Thanks Ms Mar. It is kind of funny isn't it. Hope you and Ms Auntie Baby have a great day.
Sure, thanks mckbbs. Sounds like we all know our place in the household...
These guys are going bonkers today cause the birds (swallows? starlings? not sure) have returned to nest in the roof overhang. A lot of racket going on from now through summer.
Morning everyone..strong black deep roast coffee, Mike if you will..and an apricot muffin...
I enjoy the chatter here this morning and since I've been up for hours already, hungry. Nice place to come to, always welcomed..always something interesting going on as friends drop in and out.
.if Big Brother indeed checks up on people through hubs and facebook, they will find a salt-of-the-earth gathering place of creativity, caring and motivating hubbers, and exquisite pastries here at the Emerald Wells Cafe.
Glad I could help everyone. Trying to find non-hP emails among all the HP emails was brutal before.
Good afternoon all. I am back from court and happy about the outcome. The judge was so drunk that he had to be helped up onto the bench and he dropped the charges on me and he dropped them on my son. He has to go back to court in 6 months and if he has not been given new charges in that direction, he is totally clear. I could smell the fumes from 6 feet away from the judge. I am not going to complain.
OMG Becky! Did you slip him a drink? Glad you got good outcome. You and son must be so relieved.
No, but if I had known how things were going to go today, I would have slept last night. Not a wink. Yes, we are both very relieved. I think I will send him a bottle. I don't even drink, I quit drinking years ago when I became a born again Christian.Just seemed hypocritical to drink after that.
If it had not gone in my favor, I could have gotten it redone anyway. This guy is supposedly retiring soon. He should have been retired many years ago. He is unpredictable as heck. One day, he will send every other person for a drug test and cit dozens for contempt of court. The next day, he will let everyone off. I happened on a day that he was in a good mood. Helps a lot.
Hey, Rosemay, I sent you some funny and interesting emails to cheer you up. Hope your feeling better. You could always post a 'y' for yes and an 'n' for no. lol!! Takes about a week, if I remember correctly, for it to quit hurting if you don't use it.
Goo morning everyone (at least it is morning for me). I am famished and still cannot get enough of those great pancakes. Earl, may I have a stack and that wonderful coffee of yours? Hello Em. How are you feeling? Rose, you look especially lovely in that dress that Gabby made you. Hello boys, wink.
Good afternoon all. I feel much better today, after a twelve hour sleep. Didn't sleep night before and got all caught up. Colder than heck here though.
good morning gang...no, it's 12:07...where does the time go..a good strong cup of your best, Mike...need the quiet hum of chatter at the cafe...carry on everyone..I'll sip and listen.
Hi all & thanks :)
Hi Mike..I have a bit of time travel to go through to make it to your counter, but only sometimes the headwinds slow my arrival:-) Hence the noon arrival PST
You bet...Flora and I are 60 miles as the crow flies from the great Pacific Ocean.
I would love the apple turnover.
You are so cute..sure, I'll test them for you...you just want to see me add a few pounds:-)
Never mind...when I went to Mexico in the 60's NO ONE knew where British Columbia was...in fact many weren't sure where the US ended and Canada began...and that includes the American students.
I have a pretty good idea where all of the States are in the USA, major cities, waterways etc. You're in the news!
We know more about American politics than we do of our Governments'.
Pastries are to die for..
You know the way to a starving artist's heart:-) lol
Around here, you need the calories to stay warm. The high today was 31 and it is supposed to go down below 15 tonight. I want some warm. Where is my big comforter? Katy is wearing my Canadian parka to walk the dog. It is too thick normally for here but she wore a sweater under it.
I am in shock. I just read that Whitney Houston has died. They did not say where or how so it must be really recent. She was only 48. That glorious voice gone forever.
Hello everyone, It is so cold here i don't venture outside. The temp. tonight is supposed to be 14. I noticed my patio rug was blown over to one side..It will stay there until it thaws. Hee I just heard that Whitney Houston has died.. This breaks my heart. She had a voice of an angel. I think i will have hot coffee and an apple turnover. Rosemary, I hope your hand is better.Stay warm Becky...
Just a quick sip then I head back west for another 3 hours of evening!! You'll be closing the doors soon...
Your politics have always been in the Canadian school curriculum, we were accustomed to hearing American news.. assassination of JFKennedy. I remember it well..during a morning class in Grade 7, small town B.C. Canada..the announcement came..we were all sent home.
Re: Whitney Houston..I think her life was sad so much of the time..hard struggles, hard to be at the top.
Her pain now over.
Hi friends. I can eat one of those apple turnovers with coffee. It is cold here also, about 27 with a strong wind knocking the temperature down to zero.
I heard about Ms. Houston. It is very sad. Her child must be devastated.
She was married to Bobby Brown and they did drugs together. She has been on drugs for years and I think that is what we will find killed her. She lost her voice from so much drug abuse and when she went on a European tour, people walked out, disgusted. She also had a bunch of canceled dates on her tour.
She had a really outstanding voice and I really liked her music. It is sad for her daughter. She was born in 93 so would just be a young woman now. Still in her teens.
Just a last note...can't seem to tear myself away...seems like I've been here all day...what? I HAVE been?
Flora is quite knowledgeable about American politics and is familiar with the antics of a number of senators and other legislators,,maybe has a special interest because she was born in Pennsylvania.
Mike, Sunnie just got her 500th follower. Order a new plaque. lol
Hi Rosemay!!! I saw your tiny little note, hope pain is less.
And Sunnie's heart and soul are so beautiful that everyone wants to read her work. To get a glimpse of that soul.
Hi, Rosemay. Don't get too carried away. We would love to hear from you but not if it sets back the healing.
Hi snakeslane.
http://youtu.be/H9nPf7w7pDI couldn't resist. What a voice, what a loss. Rest in Peace Whitney Houston
I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY GUITAR...
Enthralling story with poetry. So talented Mike, we really should be paying for the privelage to read your work.
Good Morning, Ya'll,
So lovely to see AAZ gracing the Cafe with your presence. For some reason, I imagined you were playing the guitar?
snakeslane, you took the words right outta my mouth. The Grammies will be sad.
I am proud of our Sunnie -- that is happy news!
I think I'll just have some tea while I try to get some grading done. Have a nice day everyone, mar.
Good morning mckbbks et al. Looking for a publisher? What a novel idea. Purple birthday party went well. Nice seafood and great guests. My niece was belle of the ball (as usual). I remember those days!
Oh wow,
I am distracted from my papers, easy enough, with laughing at snakeslane's adorable joke! So happy that soiree went well for your niece -- it is cool to feel like the belle of the ball at that age!
Mike, I was also thinking of Michael Jackson, Janice Joplin, Amy Winehouse, oh so many who could all be singing right now... I often wonder what could have been?
Well, back to my papers that I have an idea about... and thank you, the toast is so nice with my tea, mar.
Morning Mike!
Big mug of strong coffee, my good man...and another of those apple turnovers...they'll be dynamite even if they're from yesterday..although I'll wager nothing Rose bakes lasts till the next day...
I have some thinking and planning to do, so I'll take a seat in the corner here.
Thanks Mike. You're the best.
Wow, I like your publisher idea for us writers. House of Mckbirdbks has a ring to it.
Not a writer...but I think it's a winner.
Another apple turnover. I'm starving..must be the creative environment here.
Hi Again, Ya'll,
Breen, it is lovely to meet you! I agree with you and snakeslane about Mockingbird Books being a winner. It seems like it would be hard to fade from history with all of us lovely 'non-writers' around, Mike (LOL)?!
I think I need another break from grading! My arm has been twisted into one of those apple turnovers... may I join you, I'll just be thinking creatively, mar.
Sounds good Mcbirdbks, where do I sign up?
Good afternoon all. Breen, the nice thing about virtual turnovers is we don't have to worry about calories and can eat as many as we want. The bad thing is we can eat as many as we want and we will still be hungry. lol
Thank you snakeslane, that is one of my favorite of Whitney's songs. Such a pure, perfect voice. She used to get criticized for betraying her race when singing. I believe she did that so I could enjoy it also. I am not a big fan of the extra vocals that are often put in. She did beautiful and simple and let the purity of her voice speak volumes.
Hello Mck and guests, What a lovely Sunday. Could I please get a cup of coffee? We had Chinese food yesterday. I'm hungry again already. Haha.
No, it is still really cold. We have a severe weather advisory. Right now, it is 37 but going down to 20 tonight with 20-25 mph winds. Tomorrow we have rain and snow and rain and sleet. BRR
Yes, we do have the wonderfully warm place where we are all friends. But the virtual food is just not filling. I aqm eating taquitos right now.
Well, I for one am happily satisfied having polished off the second apple turnover and my cheese sandwich too.
Better gather my notes and head home.
Enjoyed sharing the booth, mar. You're great company..we both got alot done.
Bye Mike.
You forget, I am from NV. I find it wherever I live.
Dear Mike,
I will begin to pray for and concentrate on healing energy for your dear Charlie. I will keep this energy focused on his recovery.
Stay firm and positive.
Breen
Dear Mike,
I will also keep Charlie close in prayer, as well as his parents. I will now ask my sister to put him on her prayer list with 65 sisters as well, they are good and powerful women. I am a firm believer in prayer. Please keep us posted and take care of yourself too, OK, mar.
Thank you Mcbirdbks and Breen and marcoujor. I REALLY do appreciate the thoughts and prayers and will pass this on to two wonderful parents who are doing their best to work through this trying week. We are hoping and praying for a powerful and complete recovery - kindergarten is waiting to get Charlie back!
Charlie and his parents are in my prayers and thoughts too.
What a Wonderful Sweet Treat Hub to read for Valentine's Day, Mckbirdbks... and it's so non Fattening...Thanks for another Great one my Talented Friend and Hubber. Prayers go out to your Sisters Grandson Charlie.
Charlie and parents are in my prayers also. You too, 'cause I know you're fretting.
I just read about Charlie. Has there been a change? I surely lift him up before the throne of God. How old is Charlie?
Good morning Mike.
Dark roast coffee this morning..
I have contacted a good friend in California who has created a healing wheel around Charlie and his parents.
Sweet darling little boy.
Better take some buttered toast too this morning..I need a kick-start...took me forever to fall asleep!
Hi dear,
Normally I sleep easily...I was up later than usual and got my second wind:-)
Healing wheels are transcendental..drawing energies within to surround and protect.
I'll grab the same booth and watch activities as the gang start arriving.
Good morning mckbirdbks, so sorry little Charlie's been ill, I'm hoping (praying) that he is recovering now, as it sounds from your latest post.
Re: sleep. Threw two rambunctious cats outside this morning at 5 am then got back to sleep for a few hours. They nap all day and have no idea this could be a problem. Very lucky they are so furry and cute.
Good afternoon all. Sounds like we all had a hard time getting to sleep. I was awake til 5. Laying in bed, trying to go to sleep but did not make it.
Katy has taken to sleeping on the couch while the cat sleeps in her room with the door shut. She walks on her head all night.
Good Afternoon, Ya'll,
I'm just in from teaching my Holistic class and feel right at home with the discussion of the healing wheel.
It was interesting that in today's lesson plan we talked about 'intentional prayer'. This is what we are all doing for Charlie, never having met him but intending for him to be better through our deepest intentions and prayers. And research backs it up-- it works! So, Mike please forward this positive energy and information to Hawaii and NC as well...
Hoping you all have a great day. Hugs, mar.
Hello everyone..Mike I am so sorry about Charlie.I have got so far behind with keeping up at the cafe my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Mike, she was locking the cat out. That is when the cat wandered the house meowing loudly all night. Woke her father up a lot. The cat is better off in Katy's room. Then she doesn't wake him up. Another door and two walls between.
I am going to have to go to the health food store and get some more melatonin. Katy's Dr. and my grandchildren's Dr. told us to get some when they were having problems sleeping. Your body produces it but they have tablets. Those little kids would lay in bed awake until midnight and then have to get up for school. They were exhausted.
We would give them one and put them to bed and they would be out within 20 minutes.
For your sister's grandson, Charlie, I'm so hoping he's better by now with all these folks sending prayers. Take mine along too. And with hopes that you are all well. We did our medical thing this am and will find out more tomorrow. Yet another day of appointments etc..
Coffee sure sounds good on this cold rainy afternoon.
Mike -Because of my sleep issue I hadn't read much of anything yesterday so I'm only know hearing about your sister's grandson. I'm so sorry. It makes me feel silly for complaining about my sleep troubles. I will keep Charlie in my prayers.
That is great that he is back home.
Hi mckbirdbks, this is good news, very relieved to hear he is able to go home, hope he is on the mend, poor little guy, such a worry.
Wonderful news! So happy! Sometimes that virus sticks around for awhile but the worst is over so that is good!
Hi Mike...time to pack up my things and go. THanks for the great chocolate e'clair..lots of excellent calories and je ne sais quoi....good to treat ones' self now and then:-) Mar, sit with me anytime.
Mike I share your concern for Charlies' siblings.
Well keep praying, maintaining vigilance in our thoughts.
Till tomorrow.
Breen, Thank you so much for your sweet company. You are very easy to talk to, like you've always been a part of the gang here.
Mike, one step at a time and it's all positive. Just having Charlie home from the hospital is wonderful.
Hope everyone has a decent night's sleep and SYT, mar.
Great that Charlie is home. They probably already have it because he was there with them when he got it. It is good that their parents will be even more watchful for complications. Prayers will stay with them for another week or so.
On the bad news, it is snowing here. Just got back from the store and my toes are so cold, that the dog growled at me when I put them on him. Supposed to change to sleet and rain later in the night.
Hey Rosemay, we miss you!! Get better quick. That is an order. lol
OMG, I haven't been around and didn't know about Charlie being sick, but i see from your last post, he is better. I am so glad. Your family seems like our family too. I am in dire need of hot chocolate. It is snowing, ground covered and cold. Why didn't i keep heading south in my last story?? HaHa Rosemary, I miss your poetry, " Come back little Sheba "( Old movie ) That i Loved starring Burt Lancaster and Shirley Booth. I got the most adorable video from Dusty today , this dog played the piano and sang as he played. I laughed till i cried. If you didn' get it, i will send it to you. I think I will just sit back and relax while i sip my hot chocolate..It's nice and warm in here......
Can I poke my head in without my humour tagging along. Lol
Doc gave me some inflammatories yesterday (Monday) and have excercises to do. I have been responding to odd comments but my story just looked too overwhelming. Thank you Mike and Becky for giving the explanation on there. Even just clicking the mouse is painful. Anyway enough of me.
Mike I am so pleased to hear Charlie is home, I know none of you will stop worrying but sneding him home is a good sign. Some children are more susceptible to asthma which would have been the biggest problem so even if the other 2 catch/have caught the virus they may not suffer in the same way as Charlie. One of my grandsons is hospitalised with asthmas around 6 times a year but the other 3 are fine. So don't fret too much, although I know you still will :)
My prayers are stil with all of you
OK pusging it a bit here now so a quick hello to everone esle. I have my orders from mar and Becky Lol
Know I am still here reading
Hey Rosemary, so good to hear from you. Now we know that you haven't just forgotten about us. I saw you following this person and that, so knew you were on reading tonight.
Yes, some kids are more susceptible. My niece always was sicker than the others because she had asthma.
Ruby, I got that too. It is funny. My dog heard that one and came in with his ears and tail high, looking for the other dog. lol
Good to see ya Rosemay, guess left hand is not an option? Naw, forget that, silly idea. Get better, hurry up.
Mcbbks, so happy your family is feeling support from cafe, nice to hear that.
And Peg, sure hope things are getting better for hubby.
Happy Valentine's Day all! Big Hug!
Mike, I just sent the video and when I went to do that, discovered I sent it to him. lol
Happy Valentine's Day snakeslane and all my friends here.
I sent the video.. Enjoy..
Happy Valentines Day my lovely friends! Just a little somethin...somethin..
Hugs
Happy Valentines Day everyone
Night
My first rose for Valentine's Day! Oh thank you Earl and sweet Rose. Happy day to all of my friends here in the Cafe.
Good morning! Aw Mike, so sweet to remember us on Valentines..with so much to do you never forget those around you. Big hug.
This cafe has become a favourite place to come to..you are always quick to deliver coffee and pastries, even add a goodie or two when you think it's needed..your welcomes are pure gold and I thank you for being you.
I'll take my usual spot and watch the world unfold.
Good Morning, Ya'll,
What a lovely way to start the morning with that wonderful song from Sunnie and a rose from Rose and Earl! Thanks so much for making every day feel sweet when I stop by the best Cafe in the world!
I was squirming at the length of Rosemay's comment until I read she was 'trying to listen' to Becky and me?? Girl, we know you are around with us, don't be rushing back and re-stressing... slow go.
Breen, you are a honey for visiting my world... I am intending to do the very same with yours this morning. Why don't we first see what Rose has in the back... I know it will be the best!
Have a lovely day everyone, mar.
Hi mar,
Come share our spot. Isn't Mike the best.
You are so sweet to visit my hub, but there's not much there...I am not a writer but I love to comment! Too long being a parent do you think? lol
PS-- I offer this song as a seasonally appropriate addition to the jukebox... it was on the Billboard for 1956 at #14, mar,
How I wish I could live peacefully in the lovely times of the Emerald Wells Cafe. I bet Valentine's Day there is sweet. I wish you could create a real time machine! But the stories are great and will have to do - for now!
Aha, A beautiful rose. Thank you Rose and Earl. It smells so good, and Elvis too!! Thank's Mar. ' I want you, I need you, I love you. What a special song for this special day. Happy Valentins Day everyone..Oh, could i have three of those heart shaped cookies to go? They look so tasty,,Yummy
Thanks for the rose from Rose, oh that Rose (and Earl)...Nice to see the cafe hub bubbing! Wow, coffee please mckbks...thank you very much.
Thanks, must have a listen to the new additions to 'jukebox' for Valentine's Day, sweet...
LOVE MY ROSE! Thank you so much! Yes much safer hahaha
Stopping in for lunch on Valentine's Day is a real treat. Thanks for the beautiful rose!
Good afternoon all, Thanks for the rose, Rose and Earl. It is beautiful and smells so good. Let me take my allergy pill real quick. Thanks for the songs Sunnie and Mar. I haven't listened to them yet but will get to it in a minute.
Rosemay, please go slow, we don't want to extend your invalid time.
Breen, I read and commented for about six months before I even joined and wrote one hub. Our friends here are awesome.
Hi Becky,
You're right about that. This is the best place to hang out and feel welcome. Let's toast our coffees to the Emerald Cafe..
To the Cafe and our awesome host Mike!!
The rose is no problem, I got the pill in time.
Thank you Earl and Rose for the rose, beautiful and so thoughtful
Thank you Mike. Bad timing though I have been responding to all the wishes on FB and my fingers are cramping and pain right up to my elbow, so no more writing for me today.
Rosemay, shame on you. You aren't supposed to be typing that much. You will end up with that pain and cramping permanently if you don't let it heal. I have it, you don't want it.
Happy Birthday and don't you dare answer me.
What a great way to spend Valentines Day...with the gang at Emerald Wells Cafe where everybody knows your name. I always enjoy your chapters that have the poems...and the ones by Em. Carl and Boots Copler being my favorites...voted up and awesome...and another winning addition in your awesome series.
Good afternoon all.
Still morning here...does that mean I got here before you Becky?
Just kidding...9 minutes till noon..Mike, another of your fresh brewed and today, pick out something for me to treat myself with...so much to choose from and I love them all...
Where else but the Emerald Wells Cafe.... thanks for remembering, Mike. Yes, I will try one of Rose's cream puffs...I can't wait:-)
Cream puffs? Sure!!! How about two of them? Hello everyone (blushes).
Hello mckbrdbks and esteemed company...I am feeling so guilty because our west coast weather is so Springish, and I am feeling hopeful... I love Spring, Cheers, snakeslane
Breen, that is cute. I am in the central time zone. It was 1:45 when I posted that.
Yes Mck, could I get some of the Constant Comment tea please? Hold food, my hubby took me to Mexican for our anniversary of 26 years.
Hi Brenda, long time, no see. How are you doing?
snakeslane, we actually made it to 54 degrees today. No sun yet but the temp is improving.
Good Afternoon, Ya'll,
Oohh, storm clouds are brewing here as well... I think I will join my good friends for a cream puff and a big hot chocolate. I've been thinking way too hard today on my latest creations and could sure use even the thought of Springtime and the hope it brings... I love Spring too, snakeslane.
A late Valentine's Day song, let's stretch it out.
Glad you enjoyed mckbks, I did. Watched Buddy Holly story with Gary Busik? Bussey? last night on NetFlix.
Hi everyone..just a big glass of water while I attempt to sit over here. My daughter just tortured me with her workout...our third day...it will get better...it will get better..lol Hope everyone had a nice day. Beautiful here in central Texas.
loved this;
Join me, we’ll cater to our wanderlust
as Texas highways we’ll freely roam
We’ll return to our ranch and horses
with you I will always be at home
I wish though we could get you some commenters geez.
xo
lol lol
there's no seats!
no worries I'll sit on the plush carpet :o)
Hi Ms Kimberlyslyrics, I was worried about lack of comments on mckbirdbks Hub too, didn't want to say anything.
Man, no empty seats, That's OK, I'll sit down on the carpet with Kimberly..Do you think it's too late to order spaghetti? I hear it's really good....lol
Warm and dry, thanks mckbks, but really struggling to get up outa this bean bag chair, I wonder who invented that!
Ok , I googled it. An Italian design. Funny I was actually employed sewing bean bag chairs at one time (long ago).
Hi mckbrdbks, my average job was a lot shorter than that.
Usually juggled two or three jobs at a time lol
A lot of seasonal work, layoffs, then going to school, and taking whatever 'job' fit in with that schedule. Far too busy.
Hi Mck, Wow. What happened to the day? I just found a rose with my name on it. How delightful! It is just lovely, thanks so much to Rose and Earl for the thoughtfulness.
Catching up with everyone's comments is thirsty work. Any of that special recipe left?
Nice to see Rosemay the b-day girl popped in. Hope you're hands are better. Snakelane, me too, with multiple jobs and going to school. I was an admin from 8 to 5 then worked at a salon from 6 to 9 with college 2 nights a week.
Hi Ms Peg, thanks for Rosemay birthday reminder, get cheated on Valentine's Day, Happy B Day Rosemay, seeya Friday for mine (stopped counting). I was just kidding earlier about hurry up and get better, but you know what I mean, hope all better soon.
Well, I must be lazy. I only worked one job at a time and then went home and took care of my family. I would get off work and then cook and clean when I got home. Dennis tried but I banned him from the kitchen when he burnt the cast iron pots so bad that I had to burn them and re-season to get them so I could cook in them again. Had an inch crust in the bottom that I could not get out. The man can not cook.
When I worked evenings, I cooked dinner before I left for work and all they had to do was heat it up.
Hi Becky, lazy? Being Mom is a full time job. Lol on the pots.
Some men can cook. My dad could cook and both of my sons and my stepson can cook. I made sure of that. My dad cooked for our family for many years when my mom was sick and working. He had silicosis and could not work. My mom and I worked and I contributed income and house cleaning. When we came home from work, dinner would be just about ready. He took good care of us. Then I got married and my husband can't cook. I taught the boys to cook and he would remind them to stir it once in a while.
And all you have to do to clean the cast iron, is to dump it in a good hot bonfire and then dig it out the next morning and tap it with a hammer. All that nasty would fall out of it and you just oil it and heat it on low for about an hour. The oven works good.
Good Morning, Ya'll,
Wow! All I can contribute to this industrious thread of conversation is a nurse's cap (I have several, Peggy) and a brillo pad (Becky, I am exhausted at your 'easy' clean-up suggestion. Brava to you!)
I am off to start my day but couldn't resist saying HI and enjoying another one of those cream puffs. They were fabulous! May I also have a cup of Breen's dark roast coffee as well?
Hope everyone has a great day, mar.
Hello everyone. I see cream puffs are stil lavailable. May I have one with coffee and a bear claw to go. It is for my son, ahem, really. No, I mean it.
Good morning, Mike, mar and Hyphen..Yes, the coffee is smelling outrageous this am. I'm going to sit with mar..may as well bring the bear claw now too...I'll be asking for one soon anyways...forgot all about them till Hyphen mentioned one for her son.....:-)
Nice and warm, bright and active...love it here...especially first thing in the morning.
How's Charlie? I figure no news is good news.
Need to paint today ..keep on schedule..too easy to get sidetracked..way to easy!
Aw, Mike...everything you say is positive and encouraging...you are a treasure my dear..... and you created the Greatest cafe and staff to invest your time in.
Thanks for everything. for the dark roast you remember, for the gentle shove towards my easel.
I'll take a cup to go and I'm on my way.
Your thoughtfulness is not taken for granted.
Good Morning my wonderful friends,
Wishing you a great day! Nothing on my agenda today. Nice 50 degrees here in Texas. Planted some veggies yesterday..I hope I have not jumped the gun..we may have one more freeze..Mike a coffee would be great..Thank you! I do agree with Breen..this is the best place in the world.
Hello and good morning! Back for more coffee and would love a Bear Claw too. Hungry today. Sista Mar, hey there can you scoot over? Sunnie, I finally figured out who you look like and it's (drum roll) Stephanie Gosk on MSNBC news! Hi Breen, Snakeslane, Hyphen and Becky. How's it going?
Hi Sunnie and everyone.
What's Cheers to compare when the atmosphere at the cafe is so intoxicating:-)
We come here knowing we're welcomed and fussed over.
Virtual or not, I value the attention and greetings of friends I meet at the Emerald Wells Cafe.
Times are tough all 'round...this place is a calm in the storm.
Okay, I'm really on my way now....out the door..bye Mike!
Thank you Breen...Have a blessed day!
All is well here on the homefront. So grateful that the surgery is done and the recovery is well in progress. I took a bunch of pics at the hospital and there's lots of fuel for a hub.
I'm with Breen on the gratitude for the Cafe. Such a great place - good food and fine friends.
Mike, thanks for the food and good company. Over to check on Sunnie's twin?
I just bought my sunflower seeds but have to wait one more month..:( Thank you for the suggestion..They will add so much color..
I am so envious of your gardens. I want to be digging in my garden. I don't even have a plant that needs transplanted at the moment. I do have a sickly aloe very, but only time will show if it will recover from being knocked off onto the floor.
Peg, nice that hubby is recovering well.
Breen, paint pretty today.
Mar, it really is easy and a wonderful way to rescue your valued cast iron. Some of that stuff is worth quite a bit of money. Mine was, I finally sold it because it was worth so much and I needed money. A dutch oven with bale and lid went for $150, if it is made by the right people and mine was. It was old. That is also the one that he burned.
I have herbs in my window. They have been growing so long, they hardly need any care.
Actually, I just took it camping. We also had fires in our yard when we lived out in the country. I had a big fire pit, surrounded by stones. We would just lay it in there and the next morning, pull it out of the ashes and tap softly with a hammer. Then it would look just like new. Had to be reseasoned just like new too.
I have a collection of cast iron trivets that I hang on the wall in my kitchen. I like to buy the old ones, they are so fancy and pretty. I oil them up and stick them in the oven on low. The oil sinks in and they glow with a nice, rich patina. Then when I hang them on the wall in the kitchen, they are very decorative and when I need to use one, I just grab it. They are handy but out of the way.
Morning everyone. Just pooped in to say hello
Hi Rosemay, Glad to see you are here. I hope your hand and arm are better after overdoing the other day. Popping in is wonderful. Sit awhile with us.
Thanks mck, I didn't think of that. I would have to borrow some nasty cast iron to take pictures for it. I sold all mine because it was worth so much and I needed the money at the time. I guess I could just get some new stuff but it is not the quality of the old stuff. I gave my son my big frypan because he needed it with all the kids and I never used it anymore. It was an 18" one. Had another handle on the other side. So heavy that it took both hands and I couldn't lift it with my nerve damage. I dropped it a couple of times before I bought an ironstone one. Much lighter.
Hi guys, I am having pre birthday jitters. Had to go renew my DL, the photo was sooo bad. Not sure why a number (years) is so intimidating.
On a lighter (or heavier note) Becky I have old magazines from 20's, 30's, I wonder if I could find you a couple of pics for your hub. Would be fun to look.
Actually the photos on ebay are good too, wonder if you allowed to use those, maybe not...
I will look around and see. My dad and grandfather used the burn method but if you look for ways to clean it, none of them have that one.
Lol Becky, I will take that as a maybe.
You got that right mckbks.
I need to go get mine done too. It will be hard getting over there because I have to go into Nashville this time to get mine. They don't do what I need at this one. The bad thing is, I saw on the news the other day that there is a three day waiting list and you have to be there every day. Standing in line. My husband was wondering if we could hire someone to stand in line for me. My back does not like standing for long periods.
All that waiting just to renew a DL Becky?
My back doesn;t like those either. It is very fussy about what it likes.
It is on castors, it is my office chair.
I have to do something on it that can only be done at the main Nashville office. I don't know why you can't do it at the other offices all over the state. You can renew your license over the internet. Just pay your money and they will send you a new one with your old picture.
They told me I need to go in to that particular office. It is an hour away. How is that productive? Why should I have to stand in line for three days. Maybe I will just take Dennis' wheelchair down there and make them look like fools.
I only have a quick minute (shall return later). The lady with the frilled skirt sounds like Patsy Cline. I can see her in a truck!
Hello there, Hope everyone has a great day!..
Hey Sunnie, you left us some real sunshine this morning..started out gray as usual and now blue skies! Thanks a million for sharing:-) lol
THe usual, Mike..good morning! And an apricot muffin..Rose makes the best.
Didn't paint yesterday per se, but worked out some great ideas...thinking perhaps a line of quick studies in oils...I'm working on an oil portrait of Epi and Tiffy right now (he's so dear I simply wanted to do it) and am thinking I may put the transparent watercolours (preferred medium)aside for a month or two and change course...to liven things up abit.
I'll sit over here again...my brain is all abuzz...
Thank you ...it is dreary today with slight sprinkling I keep thinking..come on Sunshine!
Stopping off for some hot chocolate.
By the way-if any of you are following my Biography was stolen hub, I advise you *not* to respond to Napetv's comment. I left it up because I can't just approve comments that are complimentary, but I must warn you. He is ticked off at me. Ignore him please. Why he has started to follow me I do not know, but I have blocked him. He is a troll. I repeat. Ignore him.
I'm posting here because I don't dare post on anything of my own or he will read it.
Hey Mike...you may have an idea there about a portrait of Mr. Epigramman....I actually have a nice photo of him taken recently..such a wonderful handsome affectionate and happy visage.
Better fill the cup and let me think some more on this.
Just had a flash to do a series of say 7 "au plein air" paintings, 12x16" impressions in oil of each direction:
7 north, 7 south, 7 east, 7 west...maybe take the whole month and paint one per day, like a coloured journal of the weather...
Hmmmm.
Flora is often my inspiration...and now you are too.
Like they say around here, no self-respecting Canadian would say "wait for a better day"...there might not be for ages! Thanks for the offer of a thermos to go...that'll fuel the creative process and keep me warm at the same time.
Okay, better get moving. Now to try to scare up 28 small canvasses!
See you tomorrow.
Hi Ya'll,
I am back in from a day of being out and about... I am not going to stay long because my excellent nurse's nose smells birthday cake at the latest Cafe, so I am heading right over!
Breen, I am so interested in your beautiful artwork, especially with that darling epi...! I am always in awe of artists, so I will be checking you out, girlfriend!
Flora, I am so sorry about your troll. I don't why people have to be so rotten. You have a great attitude. It's funny, I just 'chatted' with you a moment ago on epi's new FB group about cinema and music (small world and all that!)
Becky, thanks for your confidence in me. I will greatly look forward to reading your hub about cleaning cast iron. I think you are one talented lady!
See everyone at Cafe and Bakery #30 later, mar.
Man-o-man, I have to catch a flight to reach the comment box. No small wonder, your writing is superb. I love the names of your characters. By George, you're a genius!
