Hubpages just isn’t enough
And I get things out there are damn tough
And though the praises are many
I netted less than a penny
and my meals are all on the cuff
And it’s a pleasure to stop in and see
And I like that they don’t charge me a fee
as we all sit and stare at our screens
and oh, what fulfillment of dreams
but it seems like we're writing for free
now i’m off to my garden for snails
that i boil with broccoli and kale
as i eat the last crumb
it’s washed down with cheap rum
do i go back to spinning my tales?
i recently spent time in a forest
and heard complaints that i didn’t call a florist
i said that’s completely absurd,
look there i brought you the word
as she gazed at the man whose the poorest

I love this and I can make more money by picking up pennies on the street so I guess we are writing for free.
God Bless
You are so on target with this piece. I love everyone and most everything in this crazy Hub world. I am disappointed that I cannot make the money to support my Hub writings. And while I love the loving comments, sometimes I ache for a real critique. Will I write for pay or for free? Both as long as I can write. I suppose a sneaky gleam is that we eat snails and the French eat escargot!
If I had to cash in the pennies that the Hubs generously provide me, it would not surmount to much. I still have to pay for my own wine. I am not here for the pennies, I am here for the GOLDEN friendships from scribes like yourself who keep this saddle coming back from his cave. Hugs
It seems that I'm wasting my time;
My income weighs less than a feather.
I think I'd make more than a dime
Begging outside in the weather.
I vote this one up all the way, I loved it.
Since the day I joined HubPages
My confidence has grown in stages.
And I have made so many new friends,
But there is still the question of wages.
Take care and here's to many more hubs to share.
Eiddwen.
Hub pages claims a newsletter mailing list of 137k....,clearly that means there are enough people interested in "writing" whether they get paid or not. These blog sites are all the same, basically. They are about making money for the owners of the sites, not the volunteer contributors.
But we would miss you if you weren't in here with us shoveling script against the tide.
BTW, I notice few ads on your page....what about advertising dollars?
Considering how many hubbers there are reputed to be i wonder why i seem to keep coming across many of the same people. The ones trying to earn a dollar find it difficult and the creative ones find it hard to find an audience. It should cater for both, but i suppose the people running hubpages deserve whatever they get for providing the platform. Cheers
How did all these people beat me here? I just got notice 2 seconds ago!
Mck, you are so very talented. I love your poem. I'm glad I don't rely on these hubs in order to sustain myself...I would starve to death. :)
up/useful, funny and awesome
I, like you, value the hub for reasons other than monetary. I love the bonding experience of sharing, writing and feedback. I've made more friends here than anywhere else and, for the most part, who share the commaderie of mutually empty wallets for our efforts. Yet, we gain a lot.
I'm writing content articles at AMS now, which robs me of time for creative expression. However, I've earned a small amount for each article amounting to around $400 now. I miss contributing as much here, but even artists have to eat and pay rent.
There is the element of surprise here, too, in that you just never know who might be reading. Hope springs eternal, mcbirdbks. Great piece, by the way.
I don't write for money
Hubpages said, " It's a good thing Honey
We wouldn't pay you a dime
All you can do is rhyme"
What's all the HUBbub?
You are not after the nickel
It is all about passion
Artist types are not fickle
If it's dinner you're after dear brother
My door is open.
Snails,anyone?
Very awesome poem. Got a nice laugh.
mckbirdbks,
It is heartwarming for me to know that there are so many great people in the same boat with me :) Similar to my article, I found it funny that you too "are hungry." Wishing you the best!
Sharyn
That "exact same page" is getting really crowded, isn't it.
Thank YOU so much for your support!!!
mckbirdbks -
Lovely rant
Pertaining to the scant
Flow of gold
On which we were told
Would come with the words
Penned of mckbirds

Hi all, I check my traffic sources on and off and I do get traffics from various sources like google and yahoo. Have you considered tweeting your post, digg, technorati?
I am not suggesting that these methods will bring you lots of traffics but these are just some ideas of sharing your hubs to the outside world.
So true and sooo cutely written. Thank you.
mckbirdbks - I have 100,000 views. There is no money. I haven't written for money. My story should be told. Every story should be told. Each life is never "in vain". I need to sell all. I need to divest all. I need a colorful ending. I need to wander away from the United States of Shopping Centers. I need to lie down where people consider each other equal. It is not in the America that I fought for. I hope it's time for me to go. I need to see something besides cars and shopping malls. I need more than futile political arguments that our partie$ provide. I need the Himalayas. I need to walk it all out. But not here in the US of Apathy. Will God pave the way? Or will God just keep me the fool?
I want a more colorful ending. God bless you dear.
..ah the life of a struggling artist .....but we are rich in many other ways - through our creativity and being able to meet each other and share ideas - and yes it's true for me too - I make absolutely no money here and I am living on the poverty level - can't remember the last time I had a decent meal and I always lay on my back at night and look at the stars even when it's raining or snowing ......
....but I always love your writing - you are just so witty and charming and intelligent .....
LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! What an AWESOME Hub! Voted up!
Beautifully true and yet... rare are the writers that get more than a few pennies. Writers for free yet free to write, which is more than some may have. We cannot stop writing though...
Up and awesome!
hi mcbirdbks, I expect for most of us, we were here initially to make some money! well I am certainly not making mega-bucks, but I think we have all found something valuble here, I love it, voted up!
Beautiful poem. Money...oh..money. We love money, but do we always happy with this? I don't think so. The most important thing is our heart, right. Rated up. Have a nice weekend!

I bet only 10% of all freelance writers can survive on the income they generate. The other 90% write because they write because they write. I need to write – my brain is an organ like my bladder. I must empty it frequently... or bear the consequences. To spare myself a lot of frustration and disappointment, I regard my writing as a social activity. Nobody pays me to share my thoughts verbally with others, so why must anybody pay me when I do it in writing – my favorite hobby?
If the owners of HubPages really-really needed us, they would have bought our articles. But why, if they can just allow us to fulfill our own need to write? For them we are just like monkeys in a zoo; we attract people who don’t even pay entrance fee, but who may be kind enough to leave donations. I’m almost a year at hubs, and I am still not registered for google adsense. I just don’t get the time to figure out why they did not accept my first application, but a second with a different e-mail account, and now I can’t seem to link the accepted one to hubpages..... Auwwww, my writing-time and opportunity to write is more worth to me than the pennies dished out by google.
I am happy to be here for I would have never met you..thats my story and Im sticking to it..No money for me either but I sure don't want to give up my friends I have met here
Great Poem Mck..!
Sunnie
You have struck quite a few cords with this Hub. So many so, that there must be a song in there somewhere!
..well I love the comment you gave me here Mister M - you are a scholar and a gentleman - and long before this I knew you had a 'pedigree' that most people wish they had!
You hit the nail on the head with this adorable ditty!
It would be a dream come true to be able to make money sharing our writing with the world, and perhaps one day we will find a way, this was a great poem that I can so relate to :)
I loved this ! great write! and so painfully true ! lol voted up and awesome and funny ! thanks again
As for a penny
I haven't seen any
I come back for the comments. lol
Not only have I not made my first dollar after a year on hubpages, I have even lost$$. I often think of taking time off and work on a book. With all the hours I put into hubpages everyday, I could finish a book in a month or so. But, the ache in my hub heart for my hub friends would be too heavy. You are all worth gold and have given me something that money cannot buy. I guess my question is -
"When my tummy is flat
and my wallet ain't fat -
To your home, may I stray
To be Queen for a day? "
See what you started? :):) VC
If i came here for the money
I would most definitely choose to run.
But I would miss all the sharing
that can be stimulating and fun.
I'm told Life should be easy
Without any useless toil.
Guess the roots of my life tree,
are not deep enough in the soil.
So I'll send my roots deeper,
some day to reach the water below.
And I will remain active and diligent,
so with sunshine and love surely, my life tree grow.
IT's HARD! mmmmmmmmmmmmm
.
I believe that we have to find where the Hidden Mickey is on the internet. If someone finds him it then becomes a secret. LOL!
Hubpages better than nothing I guess, like Bob Dylan sings "If you aint got nothing, you aint got nothin' to lose"
Wow great post and a great response!
Sorry, I'm not a poet.. Good Hub though. I don't think that I am going to be able to retire anytime soon, so don't feel bad!
I've made a grand total of .44 for five weeks and understand the concept of thr starving artist. I suppose I shoulsd check out Textbroker and be bored out of my mind every now and then in exchange for writing my own topics on this site.
Clever writing indeed. Loved it! : )
Haha; this is so hilarious yet true! This is how many of us feel. Right now, I am only earning small dollar amounts per month and I'm unemployed. I'm looking for a job, but I find myself oh Hubpages a lot. Thanks for this unique poem that all hubbers can relate to! I voted this up and funny.
I guess you need a non-member comment. Love your work.
And here I was thinking I was the only one making pennies! I don't feel so alone now! LOL Great poem thanks for sharing. Have a great day and God bless! :-)
and so we continue as the personifications of the "starving artists." But still, we love what we do. I enjoyed this very much. Thank you for sharing it.
Well I write here completely for free,
Google adsense cancelled as soon as I made a penny,
Still I seem to continue to write my heart,
Jotting down the veiled words till they tear me apart.
I thank you for your visits and I am enjoying some of your wonderful thoughts here. I hope to see more. And thank you to who recommended me. I am very thankful.
Yes she is wonderful and though not a writer here, her words of encoutragement are so very much appreciated. I hope to be popping up all over the Net. As they say, have 5 published novels, will travel... ;) Thank you.
What do you mean, for no reason. It has grown because it has a wonderful, blast from the past, small town feeling. It is a great ongoing story about small towns.
Thanks to you for sending thank you's to Becky. And Becky, from me to you, you do truly inspure. Thank you for that....Darrel
You are welcome, Darrel and mck. I enjoy reading, not writing. I do what I do best. Encourage and comment. I love having all this talent to read from.
This is the hub I remembered where you casually mentioned that your hubs brought you no money. Remember that Hub-pages is a loooong time process.
Oops, Sorry Mike.
a clever complaint
The HubPage Wage,
Is A Buzz,
Of Fuzz....I'm Afraid.;)
OK I honestly adored this
well done
Bravo
Thank You
mckbirdbks
Since I am following hubpages as a writer and a reader I have been following your writing closely. Now I want to announce to the world that I am following you. As for the creative part I personally relax here by penning my thoughts.
Lots of Love,
MAKUSR
Oh what fun. You put into words what so many people think. I have met so many virtual friends here though and that is worth its weight in gold.
You should try freelancing. You definitely have the talent to make more money elsewhere. Or maybe you already have tried? I freelanced for years before hitting the big writer's block wall of BLANK SCREEN/CURSOR BLINKING/WRITE A SENTENCE/DELETE IT/REPEAT.
I started posting Hubs about 11 days ago and it's been a thrill tapping away and meeting fellow hubbers. Yes, eventually (soon) I will need to start sending out queries, etc. But for now, I am just happy to be writing again. Even if it is for free.
thanks for sharing such a beauty full poem...carry on
Just noticed you are one hub away from 100th hub!
Hey Mikey,
You've got mad writing skills, darlin'. And this poem is sooo TRUE!! I love this Hub and I loved reading the comments it has generated from so many truly talented and amazing people here at HP.
Truthfully, I initially started writing here thinking I'd make a few extra bucks. And...after making only a "few" extra bucks, like...literally, I decided to stay anyway because of peeps like YOU, Mike. People who care enough to help out a temporarily lost soul such as myself. I appreciate you and everyone else here very, very much and I don't know where I'd be at this point if it weren't for all the wonderful peeps here on HubPages. To me, y'all are a blessing! (:
Much love and many hugs are being sent your way, brother Mikey...
Fondly,
Diana
Voted UP and all 5 *that's not very common for me to vote all 5, but you've definitely earned it! (:
Liar liar pants on fire!
You said I could call you a liar. (:
It's funny that out of 200,000 people, I know, like, 8. Seriously! hehe
Anytime, darlin'. Anytime.
You've given me quite a few of those yourself. (:
By the way...I was serious when I said I only know 8 peeps. I guess I'd better pull my head outta my butt and look around! HA!
("...how lucky I am to have found the best writers...") Me too!
("Have a great evening.") You too! (:
My dreams of riches lie in tatters
Writing my hubs is all that matters
My 10c is yours to do with what you will
As reading your hubs gives me such a thrill
I toiled all day, not trying to make it pay
Just glad to get the chance to have my say
It's strange but true to write this stuff
And to find people that like it is enough
To make a comment or advise on a line
That makes all my efforts completely sublime
To get a new follower or voted up
I really must say it's filling my cup
If you had not sent me to this line
I may never have bothered to write this rhyme
Curious indeed, to find that I have found
Some of the best writers are hubpages bound
Inspired I am, I must confess
Reading everyone's hubs I feel truly blessed.
Now you know why we do it.
If we had a hub convention, we'de all be together. So many creative minds together...the place would explode....I'm lovin it.
? ? ?
Wonderful poem about Hub Pages and in regards to myself, on the mark about the possibility of earning money here. But as a place to share my ideas and artistic expressions it's priceless! And I love the give and take in the comments sections as I know you do, too.
Voted up across the board.
Hello mckbirdbks,
Well I never thought I would be doing a Google search and come across you and me together in the same sentence.
I am truly honoured.
Guess what I am going to do with my little ditty?
Publish it lol
Back again to reread this little ditty. Seems I missed a few good poems added in the comments. Cool.
Hello mckbirdbks,
I took your advice
You probable forgot
Come back in a few months
And see if hubpages is enough
I get it now ha ha
Free to write
write for free ha ha
PS I tried to publish the earlier section of poetry I wrote and got flagged for duplicate content ha ha.
Keep up the good work.
Michael
Sad, but probably true.
What is an author to do?
Not put - dare I ask it -
All of my words in one basket?
Worry not my my friend,
For Squidoo pays more in the end.
Fill your address bar with the following spell:
And make a wish, and publish it there
--seesh I'm getting poetic here hahaha :)
Love your poem and I guess we all see that the pennies are the least of it. It's the friends we've made, the special comments, the advice and tips on better writing and of course, the fact that we get to publish our work. I get so much healing out of writing and the passion I have for it, is my pay. God Bless :-)
Great rhyme MC love it!
De..lite...ful!
The subject of your hub unique and you have done justice with it.Very beautiful poem mckbirdbks.Voting it up.
